What is a solution architect?

A Solution Architect is a professional responsible for designing and overseeing the implementation of complex technology solutions to meet specific business needs. They work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements, select appropriate technologies, and create architectural blueprints that guide development teams. Solution Architects ensure that all parts of a project integrate smoothly and align with organizational goals, balancing technical and business considerations. Their role often involves problem-solving, risk management, and providing technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solution architect?

To thrive as a Solution Architect, you need a strong background in software engineering, systems design, and business analysis, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in IT architecture. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), modeling languages (such as UML), and certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set outstanding Solution Architects apart. These skills ensure the design of scalable, effective solutions that align with organizational goals and integrate seamlessly across complex technical environments.

How does a solution architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project lifecycle?

Solution Architects work closely with cross-functional teams such as developers, business analysts, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. They participate in requirement gathering sessions, translate business needs into technical specifications, and guide the development team through architectural best practices. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as Solution Architects often mediate between technical and non-technical team members to resolve challenges and maintain project momentum. This role frequently involves presenting architectural decisions, soliciting feedback, and ensuring alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

Do solution architects make a lot of money?

Solution architects typically earn high salaries due to their specialized skills in designing complex systems and their experience with cloud platforms, software development, and enterprise architecture. Salaries vary based on industry, location, and experience but generally range from $100,000 to over $150,000 annually. Certifications like AWS or TOGAF can also enhance earning potential.

Is a solution architect a hard job?

A solution architect role is often considered challenging because it requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to design complex systems that meet business needs. The job can involve long hours, high responsibility, and staying current with evolving technologies and industry standards. Success in this role typically depends on experience, certifications, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Job Summary

We arelooking fora highly experienced Senior Solution Architect Manager to own the architecture, delivery, and continuous evolution of our hybrid (on premises+ Azure) infrastructure and internal developer platform within the Global Platform Design and Engineering organization.

This is a senior individual-contributor role with a balanced mix of hands-on technical delivery and technical leadership. The successful candidate will design and ship platform capabilities, set architectural direction, and raise the engineering standard across global teams — with deep expertise in Azure, Kubernetes, advanced networking, Terraform, modern CI/CD, API management, identity, security, messaging, data platforms, FinOps, and AI-powered developer platforms.

Hands-on Technical Delivery
  • Design, build, and operate core platform and infrastructure services end-to-end as reliable, secure, cost-efficient, self-service capabilities across hybrid environments.
  • Own production outcomes including reliability (SLIs/SLOs), observability, incident response, security, and FinOps (cost visibility, optimization, and accountability).
  • Lead the evolution of the Internal Developer Platform into an AI-first platform by integrating Microsoft Foundry (Azure AI Foundry), GitHub Copilot, and GitHub Enterprise Managed Users.
  • Own and evolve the Azure API Management (APIM) platform, including policy design, security, versioning, and developer experience.
  • Design and implement identity solutions for client-side applications and MicrosoftEntraID as the identity provider for internal applications.
  • Embed security-by-default and FinOps principles across identity, networking, secrets management, and the software supply chain.
  • Drive modern delivery practices across CI/CD, GitOps, environment automation, and developer experience.
Technical Leadership & Architecture
  • Own and continuously evolve the reference architecture, golden paths, and engineering standards for the hybrid on premises+ Azure environment, with strong emphasis on security, identity, and cost efficiency.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship through design reviews, code reviews, and direct collaboration with senior engineers across global teams.
  • Partner with enterprise architecture, security, product, FinOps, and engineering leadership to align platform direction with business, security, and cost priorities.
What Success Looks Like
  • The Internal Developer Platform is more self-service, reliable, secure, cost-efficient, and productive for engineering teams.
  • Microsoft Foundry, GitHub Copilot, and GitHub Enterprise Managed Users are integrated and adopted as core platform capabilities.
  • Azure API Management (APIM) is well-architected, secure, and delivers a strong developer experience.
  • Identity solutions for client-side applications and MicrosoftEntraID for internal applications are well-designed, secure, and consistently applied.
  • Architecture and standards are clear, executable, security-focused, and consistently followed across the hybrid environment.
  • Platform services support strong reliability, security, and cost posture with reduced operational toil.
  • Senior engineers are elevated through high-quality technical guidance and collaboration.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in software and infrastructure architecture, with a proven record of building and operating platforms at scale in hybrid environments.
Core Platform & Cloud Expertise
  • Expert-level Azure Cloud Architect with deep knowledge of Azure services, identity, networking, and hybrid connectivity.
  • Expert-level Kubernetes experience (architecture, networking, security, and operations).
  • Expert in Terraform (or equivalent infrastructure-as-code) at enterprise scale.
  • Expert in Azure DevOps and modern CI/CD / GitOps practices.
  • Deep hands-on experience with Azure API Management (APIM), including policy configuration, security, versioning, and platform operations.
  • Proven success designing, operating, and evolving internal developer platforms (self-service, golden paths, adoption, and platform-as-product mindset).
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Foundry (Azure AI Foundry), GitHub Copilot, and GitHub Enterprise Managed Users, with the ability to integrate these into an enterprise Internal Developer Platform.
Infrastructure, Networking, Security & FinOps
  • Expert in global load balancing, advanced network design, and hybrid connectivity patterns.
  • Deep hands-on expertise in cloud and platform security, including identity and access management, secrets and workload identity, network security, policy-as-code, and secure software supply chain practices.
  • Experience designing identity solutions for client-side applications and implementing MicrosoftEntraID as the identity provider for internal applications.
  • Strong practical FinOps experience: cost visibility, optimization, budgeting, and embedding cost accountability into platform design and operations.
  • Proven ability to design and operate secure-by-default, cost-efficient platforms in hybrid environments.
Messaging, Data & Architecture
  • Deep hands-on experience with Apache Kafka and Azure Service Bus.
  • Working knowledge of AzureDatabricks.
  • Solid experience with relational and non-relational databases, as well as caching strategies and technologies.
