Job description

Summary Employees in this position staff the solid waste collection site, operate truck scale and billing system, collect appropriate fees and ensure that items are deposited in the proper collectors, direct traffic to appropriate offloading facility, and screen loads for unacceptable waste. Operate satellite solid waste collection/recycling facilities as needed. .6 FTE - 24 hours per week

Job Duties Operate and maintain truck scale and computer billing system. Staff and perform maintenance and landscaping of the Solid Waste Collection Site. Perform necessary repairs on equipment.

Direct traffic to appropriate offloading facility. Coordinate/communicate with staff for customer use of recycling facilities, open top boxes usage, septage facility, transfer station, and inert/demolition waste. Screen waste for unacceptable waste.

Monitor and report amounts of solid waste and septage collected, arrange for special handling of sensitive materials such as asbestos, animal carcasses, evidence, etc. Collect proper fees, maintain accurate records and cash box, prepare, make deposits, prepare required reports, and forward to accounting. Provide direct customer information regarding hazardous waste disposal, recycling, systems operation and the solid waste program.

Maintain Scale House and surrounding operation in a clean and orderly fashion including cleaning, sweeping, litter pickup and general maintenance inside and outside. Receive, sort, and bulk recycled materials, household hazardous waste, and other normally accepted materials, arrange for timely shipment, enter data onto forms or computer as required. Assist with bookkeeping or other administrative tasks in the program as required.

Perform other task as directed. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Able to work in various weather conditions with dust, dirt, and vehicle exhaust fumes. Ability to lift heavy loads (50lbs), and perform physical labor over the work shift.

Able to work with potentially hazardous materials such as paint fumes, battery acids and similar materials. Familiarity with basic mechanical principles, and with equipment used for tasks. Basic knowledge of computer, math, and customer service skills.

Basic knowledge of accounting, bookkeeping, spreadsheet or related skills Maintains a high standard for accuracy, completeness and efficiency in the performance of work Ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in events, remain calm in stressful situations, relate to various personality styles in a calm, professional manner. Effectively communicates with others for purposes of gathering and relating information. Independent and self motivated to complete required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

Education, Experience & Certifications High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Washington State Drivers License. Prior experience or training in bookkeeping, accounting, customer service in high volume workplace and/or solid waste collection and recycling preferred.
