Job description

Job Title: Supervising Solid Waste Engineer / Landfill Project Manager

Job Description

This role focuses on landfill design, project management, and technical oversight for landfill redevelopment projects involving both active and closed sites. It is a design-first, project management-driven role, where construction quality assurance is handled by field teams, and the individual will provide technical oversight and integrate field data into engineering decisions and project execution.

Responsibilities

  • Lead landfill design efforts, including caps, liners, gas collection systems, and associated infrastructure.
  • Review technical deliverables and provide design oversight.
  • Manage projects from scoping and budgeting through execution and completion.
  • Support landfill redevelopment initiatives, including site repurposing, methane collection system upgrades, and compliance-driven improvements.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Interpret field, compliance, and monitoring data to inform engineering decisions.
  • Provide construction-phase engineering oversight to ensure alignment with design intent.

Essential Skills

  • Proven landfill design ownership with personal development of landfill design deliverables.
  • Experience producing design calculations, plans, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated success leading landfill or solid waste projects.
  • Ability to operate independently and make technical decisions with minimal oversight.
  • Strong landfill design experience and experience supporting landfill redevelopment projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Excel, and technical report writing.
  • 8+ years of landfill or solid waste engineering experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
  • PE license strongly preferred; EIT considered depending on experience.
  • HAZWOPER certification, or ability to obtain/refresh certification.
  • Experience with AppSheet, STS, drone technology, or smart monitoring tools.
  • Strong client-facing communication and technical writing abilities.
  • Experience supporting proposal development or client relationships.

Work Environment

The position is based in urban Irvine, CA, within a small office of approximately 8 team members. The role follows a standard 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, with hybrid flexibility allowing remote work as long as responsibilities are met. The position requires local presence due to project coordination and site proximity. The work balance is 30% field and 70% office, focusing on planning, reporting, design, and team collaboration.
