How much do solar inverter jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for solar inverter in the United States is $102,954.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $60,000.00 and $141,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are solar inverters and what do they do?

Solar inverters are devices used in solar power systems to convert the direct current (DC) electricity generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the standard form of electricity used in homes and businesses. They play a critical role in ensuring that the power generated by solar panels can be safely and efficiently used or sent back to the electrical grid. In addition to conversion, many modern solar inverters also monitor system performance, provide safety features, and can help optimize energy output.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working as Solar Inverter Technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Solar Inverter Technicians often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex electrical faults, keeping up with evolving inverter technologies, and working in outdoor environments with varying weather conditions. Addressing these challenges involves continuous learning through manufacturer training sessions, adhering to strict safety protocols, and developing strong problem-solving skills. Collaborating closely with other team members, including electricians and solar installers, also helps in efficiently diagnosing issues and ensuring system reliability.

What is the difference between Solar Inverter vs Solar Panel Installer?

AspectSolar InverterSolar Panel Installer
Primary RoleConverts DC electricity from solar panels to AC for useInstalls and maintains solar panel systems
Required CertificationsElectrical certifications, PV installation trainingSolar installation certifications, safety training
Work EnvironmentElectrical systems, technical settingsConstruction sites, rooftops, outdoor locations
Industry UsageElectrical component of solar energy systemsSystem installation and setup

While a Solar Inverter focuses on converting solar energy into usable electricity, a Solar Panel Installer is responsible for setting up the entire solar power system. Both roles require electrical and safety certifications and often work together on solar projects, but their core functions differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Inverter Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Inverter Technician, you need a solid background in electrical engineering or technology, along with experience in solar energy systems and relevant technical certifications. Familiarity with inverter diagnostic tools, solar monitoring software, and safety compliance standards is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help technicians excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with clients or teams. These skills ensure safe, efficient operation and maintenance of solar power systems, maximizing energy output and system reliability.

Job description

Your Impact

As a Solar Inverter Technician (Utility-Scale / PV Repair), you'll specialize in the troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of central and string inverters on large-scale solar farms. This role is focused specifically on power conversion equipment, not general solar installation. You'll work hands-on with GE, Sungrow and Power Electronics inverters, diagnosing faults, performing repairs, and ensuring optimal system performance across megawatt-scale solar sites.

This is a 100% travel position.

Core Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair utility-scale inverters (GE, Sungrow, Power Electronics)
  • Perform advanced inverter testing and commissioning support
  • Conduct LOTO, insulation resistance (megger), IV curve tracing, and IR thermography
  • Identify and resolve inverter faults, communication errors, and performance issues
  • Support preventative and corrective maintenance on inverter systems
  • Work closely with monitoring/SCADA teams to resolve system alerts
  • Ensure all work meets OEM specifications and safety standards
  • Complete detailed service reports, logs, and documentation
  • Maintain and operate company tools, test equipment, and vehicle
  • Assist in training junior technicians on inverter diagnostics and repair

Core Experience (Utility-Scale Required)

  • 3-4+ year of hands-on experience with utility-scale solar inverters
  • Direct experience working with: GE inverters, Sungrow inverters, Power Electronics inverters
  • Experience on megawatt-scale solar sites (ground-mount / solar farms)
  • Strong understanding of: DC/AC power conversion, Power electronics troubleshooting, Inverter fault codes and diagnostics
  • Experience performing solar maintenance with a focus on inverter systems
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and inverter communications (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of OSHA / NFPA 70E safety standards
  • Experience using multimeters, meggers, amp clamps, and testing equipment
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)

Physical / Work Environment

  • Lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs
  • 100% travel role (frequent travel to solar farm sites)
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, dust)
  • Must follow all OSHA and company safety requirements

Compensation: $28.00-$40.00+ hourly/DOE
