Job description

The Construction Services Field Technician I works collaboratively with other JDS employees in leading the Company toward its long-term vision of being the premier provider of engineering, design, and construction material testing in the region. An employee in this class will accurately perform tests and record data for quality control and engineering inspections that follow Local, regional, & National standards as well as the JDS directives and standards. The Construction Services Field Technician is expected to act as an ambassador for the JDS brand and mission.

Primary Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Maintain a positive working relationship with all department staff and other JDS personnel

  • Makes site visits and communicates with clients

  • Basic plan reading and interpretation skills

  • Maintain organization of project information and paperwork

  • Utilizes equipment to mechanically test soil, such as the DCP test

  • Auger and test in-place soil for compaction, density, and moisture content using a variety of methods

  • Locating and plotting tests on project data sheets

  • Determining soil types and bearing capacities

  • Manage documentation of soil testing, including all analysis and necessary daily activity reports

  • Perform other quality control services for construction materials during placement

  • Perform inspections on certain aspects of the project as required

  • Ability to search the web and other resources for solutions

  • Obtain other certifications needed as dictated by local agencies and JDS

  • Keep the vehicle clean and maintenance up to date

  • Maintain NCDOT QMS certification


Qualifications


Education: High School Diploma or Associate's degree


Experience: Previous soil testing or construction experience is desired, but not required.


Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills convey data both internally and externally

  • OSHA 10-hour training required (8-hour refresher courses must be current)
