What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with automation tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and knowledge of bug tracking systems such as Jira are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication set standout engineers apart by enabling thorough defect identification and clear reporting. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software reliability, meeting quality standards, and facilitating smooth collaboration across development teams.

What is a software test engineer?

A software test engineer conducts quality assurance tests on software to make sure programs are functioning properly. The three types of testing strategies are black box, where the tester is not familiar with the software, white box, where the tester is aware of the software’s internal structure, and gray box, which is a combination of the two. Responsibilities in this job include running diagnostic tests with a critical mindset, assessing the functionality, and reporting the findings.

What are some common challenges faced by software test engineers when working with cross-functional development teams?

Software Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning testing timelines with rapid development cycles, ensuring clear communication of bugs and requirements, and adapting to evolving project priorities. Collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and UX designers requires proactive communication and flexibility, especially when dealing with ambiguous requirements or shifting deadlines. To succeed, it's important to maintain detailed documentation, participate actively in agile ceremonies, and foster a collaborative attitude to resolve issues efficiently and ensure high-quality software releases.

About Us

At Symetrix, we’re driven by a bold vision: to build exceptional products, grow extraordinary people, and make a positive impact in the world. We bring innovation to life through high-performance audio and video solutions, supported by world-class customer care. From classrooms and courthouses to stadiums and large venues, our technology powers meaningful experiences every day.

Position Summary

We’re seeking a Senior Test Engineer to play a critical role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of our hardware and software solutions. In this role, you’ll lead testing efforts end-to-end, from strategy and planning through execution and final product release approval.

You’ll own both manual and automated testing processes, helping to improve systems and expand test coverage. While this role includes providing guidance and support to an associate engineer, it is primarily hands‑on and focused on technical contribution and quality outcomes.

You’ll also collaborate cross‑functionally and support customer‑facing teams in resolving real‑world challenges. If you’re passionate about building high‑quality products and enjoy solving complex technical problems, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of automated testing systems, including converting manual tests to automation
  • Ensure test coverage includes security, regulatory, and compliance requirements for AV and networked systems
  • Develop and manage test plans, cases, and schedules across all product phases (alpha, beta, release, regression)
  • Serve as the final approver for product releases
  • Execute test plans, document defects, and report results using test management tools
  • Provide day‑to‑day guidance and support to an associate test engineer
  • Review product requirements and provide input on testability
  • Test and validate prototype audio and control hardware
  • Manage the full bug lifecycle: creation, triage, resolution, and closure
  • Evaluate and implement testing tools, frameworks, and platforms to improve efficiency
  • Contribute to technical roadmap planning and test resourcing
  • Create release notes, documentation, and end‑user materials
  • Collaborate with sales and support teams to troubleshoot and resolve customer issues
  • Define and track quality metrics (e.g., test coverage, defect density, pass rates) to drive continuous improvement
Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, MIS, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in product development or test engineering
  • 10+ years testing complex software, firmware, and hardware systems
  • 6+ years developing test plans and automated test solutions
  • 4+ years testing secure, networked systems
  • 4+ years working with low-level Linux‑based hardware systems
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Lua, JavaScript, etc.)
  • Experience building test applications using .NET and C#
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, Playwright)
  • Familiarity with Git/GitHub and test management tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence)
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Preferred:
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers
  • Experience with professional audio systems and terminology
  • Experience with Audio Precision test systems
  • Knowledge of Dante, AEC, and VoIP technologies
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure)
  • Passion for audio technology (e.g., DSP, studio or broadcast engineering, DAWs)
Why Join Symetrix?
  • Work on innovative products used in impactful environments
  • Collaborate with a passionate, talented team
  • Opportunities for technical growth and development
  • Help shape the future of audio/video technology
