What is a software manager?
A software manager oversees the development, installation, and maintenance of new or upgraded software for an organization. As a software manager, you coordinate with staff to determine client needs and expectations, establish budget and timelines, and ensure that employees use the product correctly. You may also train company employees on how to utilize the software after it is installed and help troubleshoot problems that arise.
What is the difference between Software Manager vs Software Engineer?
| Aspect | Software Manager | Software Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or higher in CS or related field; management experience | Bachelor's or higher in CS or related field; coding skills |
| Work Environment | Oversees teams, manages projects, strategic planning | Develops software, writes code, tests applications |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used in tech companies, startups, large enterprises | Used across all tech sectors, startups, corporate IT |
The main difference between a Software Manager and a Software Engineer lies in their roles. Software Managers focus on team leadership, project management, and strategic planning, while Software Engineers are primarily responsible for coding and developing software. Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and work focus differ significantly.
How does a software manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Job description
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will ensure our spacecraft satisfies the needs of our critical partners, and crafts the larger vehicle data architectures to enable us to successfully implement the required capabilities for our mission. As a Software Systems Engineer on the Spacecraft Systems Engineering team, you will provide the technical glue connecting data from our flight software to the systems functions to our ground operations and test engineering. You will help ensure the program requirements, operational descriptions, and system designs have been shaped so that the overall system meets our customers' needs.
You will be responsible for ensuring efficient integration of flight software into test environments, and with the spacecraft, which includes spacecraft bus software systems, and software products across the entire life cycle (such as architecture definition, requirements formulation, software development plans and processes, and verification processes).
To accomplish this, you will work closely with our spacecraft development engineers, flight software developers, spaceflight operations organization, test engineering, and ground system engineers.
This role will encompass developing standards and processes and ensuring adherence to them. This position demands a systems thinking approach, requiring a comprehensive understanding of the architectural and design elements of interconnected systems, and how they will be tested and verified.
