What is software engineering?

Software engineering is the discipline of designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications and systems. It involves applying engineering principles and systematic methods to ensure software is reliable, efficient, and meets user requirements. Software engineers work with programming languages, frameworks, and tools to solve problems and build solutions for various industries. The field encompasses many specializations, including front-end development, back-end development, DevOps, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or C++, along with a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and a relevant degree. Familiarity with development tools like Git, cloud platforms, version control systems, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are valuable soft skills that help engineers collaborate and deliver high-quality solutions. These skills and qualities are essential to create efficient, maintainable software and to adapt to rapidly evolving technologies and project requirements.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when working on large-scale projects, and how can they be addressed?

Software engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing codebase complexity, coordinating with distributed teams, and ensuring consistent coding standards. To address these issues, teams typically implement version control systems, conduct regular code reviews, and use agile methodologies to break tasks into manageable sprints. Effective communication tools and clear documentation also play a crucial role in keeping everyone aligned and minimizing misunderstandings.

What is the difference between Software Engineering vs Software Development?

AspectSoftware EngineeringSoftware Development
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related, certifications like CSWA or AWSBachelor's in Computer Science or related, coding bootcamps
Work EnvironmentDesigning, planning, and managing software projectsWriting, testing, and debugging code
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for complex systemsCommon in startups, small teams, and for app development

Software engineering involves designing and managing software projects, focusing on architecture and lifecycle. Software development primarily centers on coding and building applications. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, software engineers often handle broader project planning, whereas developers focus on coding tasks.

Is software engineering a well paying job?

Software engineering is generally a well-paying profession, with median salaries often higher than many other fields, especially for those with experience, specialized skills, or certifications. Salaries can vary based on location, industry, and level of expertise, but it is considered a lucrative career choice overall.

What jobs can a software engineer do?

A software engineer can work in roles such as application developer, systems engineer, web developer, mobile app developer, or software architect. They often design, develop, test, and maintain software solutions using programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, and may work in various industries including technology, finance, healthcare, and gaming.

What work will a software engineer do?

A software engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications and systems. They write code using programming languages, collaborate with teams to solve technical problems, and often use tools like version control systems and development environments. Their work may also involve debugging, documentation, and ensuring software meets quality standards.

ABOUT DYNACONNECTIONS

Founded in 2001 and based in Austin, Texas, dynaConnections is a SaaS technology company serving the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) industry. Our flagship platform, connectMLS, powers mission-critical workflows used daily by MLS organizations, brokers, agents, and consumers nationwide.

We develop infrastructure that must be secure, highly available, and scalable, managing large volumes of listing data, real-time search, integrations, and compliance requirements. Our success relies on long-term client relationships, disciplined engineering methods, and a culture that values accountability, ownership, and execution.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead our engineering team and ensure our products are stable, high-quality, and competitive. This role combines leadership, delivery oversight, and technical guidance.

You will directly oversee software engineers and QA engineers across multiple agile teams, ensuring predictable delivery, production stability, and continuous improvement. Success in this role depends on building strong teams, maintaining high engineering standards, and aligning daily execution with company strategy.

STRATEGIC MANDATE

This role combines strategic and operational responsibilities and involves hands‑on leadership within a high‑performing, agile product team. As a technical leader at dynaConnections, a small but established SaaS company, we need a coach who is responsible for:

  • Achieving sprint predictability and delivering high‑quality products.
  • Developing talent and excelling in recruiting the right people.
  • Constantly improving engineering processes and tools.
  • Completing any other tasks related to your role as assigned by leadership.

ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Lead, mentor, and develop both the developers and QA engineers that make up COD teams (Customer‑Oriented Development: typically, 2–4 developers and 1–2 QA engineers per COD team), operating within an Agile sprint framework.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and delivery standards; collaborate with technical leads to uphold code quality, engineering practices, and sprint commitments.
  • Establish quarterly and yearly performance objectives aligned with company goals.
  • Conduct individual performance reviews, career development plans, and regular 1:1s to keep engineers motivated, accountable, and continuously growing.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain top‑tier engineering talent.
  • Act as the main escalation point for delivery blockers, proactively resolving issues to ensure the team meets its release deadlines on time.

DELIVERY & EXCUTION

  • Ensure consistent sprint execution and on‑time delivery without sacrificing quality.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Release, and Support teams to eliminate obstacles and ensure consistent delivery.
  • Monitor and enhance delivery metrics like velocity, defect patterns, and release quality.
  • Guarantee reliable delivery without sacrificing quality.

TECHNICAL & PLATFORM STEWARDSHIP

  • Work with senior engineers and architects to guide technical direction.
  • Support modernization efforts and decrease technical debt
  • Ensure system performance, reliability, and scalability in a production SaaS environment.

QUALITY, STABILITY & RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Foster a quality‑first engineering culture with robust testing and review practices.
  • Participate in release readiness, incident response, and root cause analysis.
  • Assist in developing change management practices that lower production risk.

STRATEGIC CONTRIBUTION

  • Offer input on technology investments and roadmap priorities.
  • Support build versus buy decisions and system integration strategies.
  • Ensure engineering decisions enhance long‑term competitiveness.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

  • Strong, committed engineering teams with defined growth opportunities.
  • Reliable delivery and enhanced software quality.
  • Stable, high‑performing production systems.
  • Engineering outcomes aligned with business strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Over three years of engineering leadership experience.
  • Proven success in production SaaS environments where uptime, scalability, and performance are essential.
  • Demonstrated history of managing engineering talent, conducting structured performance reviews, and developing career growth frameworks.
  • Sufficient technical knowledge to credibly collaborate with engineering teams and assess technical trade‑offs; individual architectural expertise is not necessary (see Preferred section).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps automation practices.
  • Experience improving engineering process maturity in growing organizations.
  • Experience in distributed systems or modular monolith architecture.

PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • An understanding of MLS systems, real estate technology, or data‑intensive SaaS platforms.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch and NoSQL technologies (MongoDB or similar).
  • Awareness of Artificial Intelligence concepts & AI‑based programming techniques.

LEADERSHIP ATTRIBUTES
