Position Overview:

The Application Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting secure web applications, APIs, and related technology solutions. This role will focus primarily on modern Microsoft-based application development, including .NET, C#, Microsoft SQL Server, Azure cloud services, and responsive web technologies in a cloud first architecture. 


The ideal candidate is a hands-on developer who can work closely with business stakeholders, technology team members, and leadership to understand business needs and deliver practical, maintainable software solutions. This role requires strong technical judgment, a security-first mindset, and the ability to contribute across the full application development lifecycle from requirements and design through deployment and ongoing support. 


Responsibilities 

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support secure enterprise web applications using Microsoft .NET technologies. 
  • Build and maintain internal and external-facing APIs that support business processes, system integrations, and application functionality. 
  • Develop application solutions using C#, .NET, ASP.NET, Blazor, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern front-end frameworks where appropriate. 
  • Design or assist in designing and implementing efficient Microsoft SQL Server database objects needed to support application functionality, including tables, views, stored procedures, and queries. 
  • Collaborate with business users, product owners, analysts, and other developers to gather requirements and translate business needs into technical solutions. 
  • Build cloud-native applications using Microsoft Azure services, patterns, and best practices (Functions, Logic Apps, etc.). 
  • Participate in application architecture discussions and contribute to decisions around performance, scalability, maintainability, and security. 
  • Support application authentication, authorization, and identity management using modern security practices such as OpenID Connect, OAuth, Azure AD, or Azure B2C. 
  • Develop and maintain integrations between internal systems, external platforms, and third-party services. 
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application issues across development, test, and production environments. 
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-documented code that aligns with team standards and secure development practices. 
  • Participate in code reviews, quality assurance activities, and continuous improvement of development processes. 
  • Use source control, DevOps pipelines, and deployment tools to support reliable and repeatable software delivery. 
  • Work with the Application Development team to modernize legacy applications, improve system performance, and reduce technical debt. 
  • Maintain a strong focus on protecting sensitive business, client, member, and healthcare-related information. 
  • Stay current with modern application development practices, Microsoft cloud technologies, and emerging tools that can improve software delivery. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, software engineering, or a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in application development, software engineering, or a similar technical role. 
  • Strong experience developing applications with C# and the Microsoft .NET platform. 
  • Experience building secure web applications and APIs for internal and external users. 
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, including writing queries, stored procedures, and designing application-supporting database structures. 
  • Experience with front-end web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, Blazor, Vue.js, or similar frameworks. 
  • Experience developing, deploying, or supporting applications in Microsoft Azure or another cloud environment. 
  • Familiarity with Azure services such as App Services, Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Key Vault, Storage Accounts, Application Insights, and related platform services. 
  • Understanding of secure development practices, including authentication, authorization, data protection, logging, and error handling. 
  • Experience with RESTful API design and system integration concepts. 
  • Familiarity with source control and DevOps tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, or similar platforms. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex application issues and identify practical solutions. 
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. 
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively in a team setting, or remotely as business needs require.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with healthcare, pharmacy benefit management, claims processing, or other regulated business environments. 
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, PHI, PII, or similar data protection requirements. 
  • Experience with mobile application development that securely interfaces with public APIs.
  • Experience designing responsive or mobile-friendly web applications. 
  • Experience with AI accelerated development using tools such as Claude Code, Devin, or Windsurf. 
  • Experience modernizing legacy applications or migrating applications to cloud-native platforms. 
  • Experience with automated testing, unit testing, integration testing, or test-driven development. 
  • Familiarity with containerization, microservices, or cloud-native design patterns. 
  • Experience working in Agile or iterative software development environments. 
  • Familiarity with application monitoring, logging, and performance tuning tools.
