Software Engineering Manager information

What are some common challenges faced by software engineering managers when leading diverse development teams?

Software Engineering Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing technical leadership with people management, aligning team members with different backgrounds and skill sets, and ensuring effective communication across remote or cross-functional teams. Navigating these challenges involves fostering an inclusive environment, setting clear expectations, and adapting management styles to individual team members’ needs. Successful managers also prioritize regular check-ins and feedback to keep projects on track and support professional growth within the team.

What does a software engineering manager do?

A software engineering manager oversees a team of people who are working on the development of new computer software or the enhancement of existing computer programs. Because this is a management job, your duties may include coordinating and planning with other departments within the company and with company executives. In addition to management skills, you need a firm understanding of the technical aspects of software engineering. Another aspect of this career involves understanding the market and competitor’s products so that your software can compete and meet market demands.

What is the difference between Software Engineering Manager vs Software Developer?

The main difference between a Software Engineering Manager and a Software Developer lies in their roles and responsibilities. Managers oversee teams, coordinate projects, and handle strategic planning, while developers focus on coding and technical implementation. Both roles are essential in the software development lifecycle, but they serve different functions within an organization.

What does a software engineering manager do?

A Software Engineering Manager oversees a team of software engineers, guiding the development of software projects from planning to implementation. They are responsible for managing the team's workflow, ensuring high-quality code, and meeting project deadlines. In addition to technical leadership, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and performance reviews. Their role bridges the gap between technical execution and business objectives, ensuring that software solutions align with strategic goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership, and project management, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools, agile methodologies, version control systems, and, in some cases, certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are valuable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for successfully guiding technical teams, delivering projects efficiently, and fostering a collaborative and innovative engineering culture.

Job Description:

QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited (NYSE: BB; TSX: BB), provides the trusted foundation that software-defined and physical AI systems depend on to operate safely and predictably in the real world. For nearly half a century, QNX has powered safety-critical applications where failure is not an option. The business leads the way in delivering safe and secure operating systems, hypervisors, middleware, solutions, and development tools, along with the support and services delivered by trusted embedded software experts. Today, QNX technology underpins hundreds of millions of vehicles on the road and a wide range of mission-critical systems across industrial controls, robotics, medical devices, commercial transportation, rail, and aerospace and defense.

Are you the person we are looking for?

The QNX Power Management Test Team is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Software Test Specialist to help validate and deliver next-generation file systems technologies. This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of software, hardware, automation, and embedded systems while solving challenging technical problems that directly impact product reliability and customer success. You'll design sophisticated test suites, build scalable automation frameworks, execute system-level validation on real hardware, and collaborate with world-class developers to identify and resolve issues before they reach customers. Every day offers new technical challenges, from debugging complex failures to improving automated test coverage and accelerating release quality. If you're energized by automation, passionate about quality, and enjoy working hands-on with hardware in a fast-paced engineering environment, we'd love to talk to you.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, optimize automated tests, test frameworks and test cases to continuously improve test coverage, reliability, and execution efficiency.
  • Execute software validation activities on both reference and customer hardware platforms.
  • Debug complex software and hardware interactions, analyze failures, and perform root-cause investigations.
  • Create and maintain detailed defect reports and verify fixes through rigorous regression testing.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive test plans, test cases, and test documentation based on product requirements.
  • Generate high-quality test reports and communicate results clearly to development and leadership teams.
  • Build, maintain, and improve automation lab infrastructure and testing environments.
  • Collaborate closely with development, integration, and test teams to ensure product quality across the software stack.
  • Reproduce and isolate field-reported issues using creative troubleshooting and validation techniques.

What You Bring

  • Experience developing automated test solutions for software or embedded systems.
  • Must have strong programming skills in Python, C, and Shell scripting
  • Hands-on experience with Linux
  • Experience testing file systems features across multiple hardware platforms.
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, validation strategies, and test automation best practices.
  • Proven experience creating test plans, developing test cases, executing tests, and reporting results.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively contributing within a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with a track record of managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality results.
  • Experience with modern development workflows and tools, including Git or SVN, Jira, Jenkins, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, and system validation skills in embedded software and hardware environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear, concise, and actionable defect reports.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

Imagine what you could do at QNX!
