What are Software Engineers?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

Will AI replace developers in 2026?

Job description

Job Description:

Senior Software Engineer

About Kaleris

Kaleris is a private equity-backed software firm focused on supply chain optimization, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. We are a global leader in the supply chain execution market, accelerating the digital transformation of supply chains for industrial and finished goods shippers and carriers - combining best-in-class solutions for yard management, shipment visibility, and asset management across rail, truck, and multi-mode transportation.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who thrives in a dual-track role: delivering on product roadmap commitments while serving as a technical escalation point for prioritized customer issues. You will bring deep engineering expertise to both planned feature development and reactive problem-solving, working closely with product, engineering, and customer success teams to keep our yard management and finished vehicles logistics solutions moving forward.

This is a high-impact role for someone who is as comfortable diving deep into an escalated customer issue as they are designing a well-architected feature.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Customer Issue Resolution

  • Receive and own pre-triaged, escalated customer issues from the Customer Support team and drive them to resolution
  • Debug and diagnose complex production and integration problems across the full stack
  • Identify root causes and implement durable fixes - not just workarounds
  • Communicate proactively with stakeholders on issue status, timelines, and resolution plans
  • Document findings and contribute to internal knowledge bases to reduce repeat escalations

Roadmap Development

  • Collaborate with teammates to formulate detailed designs, implement solutions from requirements, and estimate effort
  • Participate actively in agile product development, including sprint planning, code reviews, and retrospectives
  • Adhere to test-driven development practices and maintain high standards for code quality
  • Support product deployments, configuration, and post-release validation

Experience Needed

  • 5+ years of software development experience, with a track record of owning complex features end-to-end
  • Strong Java proficiency - able to design, build, debug, and own Java-based services and features end-to-end
  • Strong debugging and analytical skills - comfortable isolating issues across frontend, backend, and data layers
  • Hands-on experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX
  • Solid experience with PostgreSQL - writing queries, analyzing execution plans, and resolving data issues
  • Familiarity with queuing systems and API integrations (Redis/Resque, JSON-based systems, or similar)
  • Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities - planned roadmap work alongside resolving escalated issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; English proficiency required
  • Ability to work independently and with distributed, international remote teams
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails or comparable MVC web frameworks (Django, Laravel, or similar)
  • C++ experience
  • Familiarity with GPS, location-based services, or digital mapping technologies
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and deployment pipelines
  • Background in supply chain, logistics, or transportation software

Kaleris is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
