What is a software engineer manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineer managers when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

Software Engineer Managers often find the shift from coding-focused work to leadership responsibilities challenging. Instead of primarily writing code, their days are filled with mentoring team members, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

You will help grow the market share of assigned brands within your region.
You will play a key role in expanding the market presence of OpenRoads Designer across the US, Canada, and beyond by leading targeted sales campaigns, leveraging social media platforms like LinkedIn, sharing customer success stories, conducting discovery calls, prospecting new opportunities, coordinating product demonstrations, and more.

  • Collaborate with the product development and marketing teams to gather client feedback and provide input for product enhancements and new features.
  • Maintain a detailed knowledge and understanding of all commercial Offerings and software support policies.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and competitor activities and provide insights to the management team.
  • Attend industry conferences, trade shows, and events to generate leads and build brand awareness.
  • Meet and exceed sales targets and revenue goals consistently.
  • This is a full-time role expected to work 40 hours per week, home-based in the US.
  • Requires sitting or standing at will while performing work on a computer (or any other physical requirements). The role requires communication with managers, peers, and other colleagues of the company in person (on occasion), and by utilizing Microsoft Teams chat, calling, and meeting functions.
  • Ability to travel 15% of the year.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Preferred minimum of four (4) years of experience within a transportation engineering organization or selling engineering software.
  • Prior experience working with OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Designer, MicroStation, GEOPAK, InRoads, Civil 3D, and/or other roadway design applications.
  • Experience with roadway design, alignments, corridors, terrain modeling, plan production, or transportation infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
  • Excellent English language verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively present information to users and prospects via phone and web.
  • Ability to understand client requirements and translate them into software solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with tools such as LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Salesforce, or similar CRM is a plus.
  • Knowledge of DOT workflows, digital delivery initiatives, BIM for transportation, or infrastructure project delivery is a plus.
