What is a software engineer manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineer managers when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

Software Engineer Managers often find the shift from coding-focused work to leadership responsibilities challenging. Instead of primarily writing code, their days are filled with mentoring team members, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on developer who can work closely with business stakeholders, technology team members, and leadership to understand business needs and deliver practical, maintainable software solutions. This role requires strong technical judgment, a security-first mindset, and the ability to contribute across the full application development lifecycle from requirements and design through deployment and ongoing support.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support secure enterprise web applications using Microsoft .NET technologies.
  • Build and maintain internal and external-facing APIs that support business processes, system integrations, and application functionality.
  • Develop application solutions using C#, .NET, ASP.NET, Blazor, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern front-end frameworks where appropriate.
  • Design or assist in designing and implementing efficient Microsoft SQL Server database objects needed to support application functionality, including tables, views, stored procedures, and queries.
  • Collaborate with business users, product owners, analysts, and other developers to gather requirements and translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Build cloud-native applications using Microsoft Azure services, patterns, and best practices (Functions, Logic Apps, etc.).
  • Participate in application architecture discussions and contribute to decisions around performance, scalability, maintainability, and security.
  • Support application authentication, authorization, and identity management using modern security practices such as OpenID Connect, OAuth, Azure AD, or Azure B2C.
  • Develop and maintain integrations between internal systems, external platforms, and third-party services.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application issues across development, test, and production environments.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-documented code that aligns with team standards and secure development practices.
  • Participate in code reviews, quality assurance activities, and continuous improvement of development processes.
  • Use source control, DevOps pipelines, and deployment tools to support reliable and repeatable software delivery.
  • Work with the Application Development team to modernize legacy applications, improve system performance, and reduce technical debt.
  • Maintain a strong focus on protecting sensitive business, client, member, and healthcare-related information.
  • Stay current with modern application development practices, Microsoft cloud technologies, and emerging tools that can improve software delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, software engineering, or a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in application development, software engineering, or a similar technical role.
  • Strong experience developing applications with C# and the Microsoft .NET platform.
  • Experience building secure web applications and APIs for internal and external users.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, including writing queries, stored procedures, and designing application-supporting database structures.
  • Experience with front-end web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, Blazor, Vue.js, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience developing, deploying, or supporting applications in Microsoft Azure or another cloud environment.
  • Familiarity with Azure services such as App Services, Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Key Vault, Storage Accounts, Application Insights, and related platform services.
  • Understanding of secure development practices, including authentication, authorization, data protection, logging, and error handling.

  • Familiarity with source control and DevOps tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex application issues and identify practical solutions.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively in a team setting, or remotely as business needs require.
  • Strong commitment to quality, security, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications
