What is a Software Engineer Manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting‑edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.

About The Team

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead our Internal Tools software engineering team. This role involves guiding a talented group of software engineers building mission‑critical applications that streamline business processes, amplify employee productivity, and scale Anduril into a next‑generation defense prime.

We value technical leaders who understand the nuances of distributed, scalable systems and can empower their teams to develop innovative solutions that directly benefit the business bottom line.

What You'll Do
  • Lead a high‑performance software engineering team to create elegant SaaS and on‑premise solutions surpassing current market alternatives.
  • Guide and mentor engineers, enhancing team capabilities, coding standards, and delivery practices.
  • Define strategic technical roadmaps in collaboration with product and design teams, translating business needs into technical execution.
  • Drive the implementation of automation and internal tool enhancements, delivering tangible operational efficiencies and cost savings.
  • Champion best practices for software design, code reviews, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement within the team.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience, including at least 2 years of team leadership/management experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or related technical fields (or equivalent experience).
  • Demonstrated success leading teams building scalable enterprise applications with stringent availability requirements.
  • Strong technical proficiency in modern web technologies such as JavaScript, React, TypeScript, and web frameworks (e.g., Remix, NextJS).
  • Exceptional ability to empathize with users, translating business and user needs into strategic engineering priorities.
  • U.S. Person status required due to export‑controlled data access.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with our tech stack, including AWS, TypeScript, and React/Remix.
  • Previous experience in rapidly scaling engineering teams and processes within startup or hyper‑growth environments.
  • Demonstrated ability in balancing strategic, long‑term architectural goals against short‑term product delivery needs.
  • Eligibility for obtaining and maintaining a U.S. Top Secret (TS) clearance.
