What does a Software Development Software Engineer do?

A Software Development Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications or systems. They work with various programming languages and technologies to create software solutions that meet user or business needs. Their responsibilities often include writing code, debugging issues, collaborating with other team members, and ensuring software quality and performance. Software Engineers may also participate in planning, code reviews, and updating documentation to support ongoing software projects.

What is the difference between Software Development Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware Development Software EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, certifications optionalBachelor's in CS or related field, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentCollaborative teams, Agile/Scrum settings, cross-functional projectsIndividual or team projects, coding-focused tasks
Industry UsageUsed across tech companies, startups, and large enterprisesCommon in software firms, tech startups, and freelance work
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for roles involving system design and architectureTypically searched for coding and application development roles

While both roles involve software creation, a Software Development Software Engineer often focuses on system design, architecture, and collaborative project management, whereas a Software Developer primarily concentrates on coding and implementing software solutions. The engineer role may require broader technical knowledge and involvement in the development lifecycle, making it suitable for those interested in both design and coding aspects of software projects.

How do Software Development Software Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Software Development Software Engineers often work closely with product managers, designers, and quality assurance teams to deliver well-rounded solutions. Collaboration usually involves attending regular stand-up meetings, participating in sprint planning, and conducting code reviews. Effective communication and a willingness to incorporate feedback from various stakeholders are key to ensuring project goals are met and potential issues are identified early. Building strong relationships with colleagues in different roles can also streamline the development process and foster a positive team environment.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior software engineers, especially those with extensive experience, expertise in high-demand skills like machine learning or cloud computing, and working at large tech companies or startups, can earn $300,000 or more annually. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, particularly in competitive markets or leadership roles.

Can a software engineer be a software developer?

A software engineer and a software developer often have overlapping roles, and many professionals perform both functions. Typically, a software engineer applies engineering principles to design and build software systems, while a software developer focuses on writing and implementing code. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably depending on the company or project, but both roles require programming skills and knowledge of development tools.

Will AI replace developers in 2026?

As a software development engineer, AI is expected to augment coding and automate repetitive tasks, but it is unlikely to fully replace developers by 2026. Human skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and understanding user needs remain essential in software creation and maintenance. Developers will need to adapt by learning AI tools and focusing on complex, high-level tasks.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Software engineers in senior or specialized roles at large technology companies or in high-demand sectors can earn $500,000 or more annually, often including base salary, bonuses, and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills in areas like machine learning or cloud computing, and often involves working in competitive, high-paying environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Software Engineer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and knowledge of software development methodologies (such as Agile or Scrum) are commonly required. Strong collaboration, communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills for working effectively in team environments and responding to project changes. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable, maintainable software and contributing to successful, dynamic development projects.

Job description

About You and The Role

Zipline's autonomous drone delivery system relies on software that behaves safely and predictably across sensor drivers, perception, navigation, guidance and control, motion planning, power management, actuator control and fleet autonomy. As a Senior Software Systems Validation Engineer, you will lead end-to-end evaluation from simulation through full-system flight testing.

You will bridge Systems Engineering and Software Development, owning validation strategy and the evidence that exposes capability gains, gaps, regressions, and safety risks. Your work will inform engineering decisions for large-scale deployment and operating-domain expansion across aircraft performance, delivery operations, docking systems, and fleet orchestration.

What You'll Do

Define system-level validation strategy for software performance, reliability, and safety.
Design, implement, and execute nominal, adversarial, stress, and edge-case scenarios from simulation through full-system flight testing.
Build metrics, visualizations, real-time performance and safety monitors, and automated tools that reveal capability changes and regressions.
Set validation evidence and exit criteria that inform release, deployment, and operating-domain expansion decisions.
Debug failures across simulation, hardware, firmware, embedded software, and application software; clearly document findings and escalate unresolved safety or performance risks.
Partner with test infrastructure and data platform teams to increase automated validation coverage, efficiency, and precision while maintaining development and deployment velocity.

What You'll Bring

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
3+ years of software development, software systems engineering, or software validation experience with robotic systems.
Strong experience in one or more relevant domains: embedded Linux, perception, motion planning, navigation, control, estimation, dynamics, connected systems, or power management.
Experience developing nominal, adversarial, stress, and edge-case validation for autonomous robotics.
Experience root-causing failures in complex autonomous systems and working with large datasets in production pipelines.
Proficiency with Python and SQL, plus programming languages used in safety-critical applications such as MISRA C, Rust, or C++.
Experience applying risk-assessment tools and techniques and deriving software safety or performance requirements from functional safety requirements or similar requirements decompositions.

What Else You Need To Know

The starting cash range for this role is $150,000-$250,000. Please note that this is a target, starting cash range for a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for this role. The final cash pay for this role will depend on a variety of factors, including a specific candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, working location, and projected impact. The total compensation package for this role may also include: equity compensation; discretionary annual or performance bonuses; sales incentives; benefits such as medical, dental and vision insurance; paid time off; and more. This position may be hired at one of two levels based on the candidate's experience, skills, and demonstrated scope:

  • Software Engineer, Test Infrastructure II: $150,000-$190,000
  • Senior Software Engineer, Test Infrastructure: $190,000-$250,000
Level and base salary will be determined through the interview process. Factors may include relevant experience, technical proficiency, expected responsibilities, location, and internal equity.
