Software Engineer In Training information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer In Training, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer In Training, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, coding languages such as Python or Java, and basic software development tools is typically required. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help set individuals apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for adapting quickly, contributing effectively to projects, and developing into a well-rounded software engineer.

What kinds of projects can a Software Engineer In Training expect to work on, and how are these projects structured for learning and development?

As a Software Engineer In Training, you will typically be assigned to smaller-scale features or assist with components of larger projects under the guidance of more experienced engineers. These projects are structured to gradually introduce you to the company’s technology stack, development processes, and best practices. You’ll often participate in code reviews, pair programming, and regular team meetings, which help build both technical and collaborative skills. The environment is designed to provide mentorship and hands-on experience, so you can confidently progress to more complex responsibilities over time.

What is a Software Engineer In Training?

A Software Engineer In Training is an entry-level professional who is learning the skills and practices required to become a fully qualified software engineer. Typically, they work under the supervision of senior engineers, assisting with coding, testing, and debugging software applications. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to industry-standard tools and processes. Over time, individuals in this position gain the necessary knowledge and experience to advance to more independent engineering roles.

What is L1, L2, L3, and L4 developer?

In software engineering, L1, L2, L3, and L4 typically refer to different levels of developer seniority or experience, with L1 being entry-level and L4 being senior or lead roles. These levels often correspond to increasing technical skills, responsibilities, and expectations, and are used by companies to structure career progression and compensation. As a Software Engineer In Training, you are usually at the L1 or L2 level, focusing on learning core skills and gaining practical experience.

What is the difference between Software Engineer In Training vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware Engineer In TrainingSoftware Developer

Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...

About the Team
Powerful entertainment experiences come from brilliant teams, and at VIZIO, we work together to deliver the latest SmartCast TV and Sound Bar Technologies across the world. We are skilled engineers who care about the people they work with, the work they create, and the teams they nurture. At VIZIO we’re built around supporting each other in a relaxed, collaborative environment. We’re focused on learning, doing something new and valuable, and encouraging our team to do the same. With flexible work hours, a collaborative open-door environment, and teams who support each other in and out of the office, our work experience becomes meaningful. (And we don’t focus on hierarchy; instead, we work together to create the roles we’re most excited about). Now we need a brilliant Sr Software Engineer to join us and own the development of our features through the full-release lifecycle.
About the Role
We are looking for a driven Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to support a backend-heavy, microservices-based architecture built primarily in TypeScript. This role requires someone who can operate independently and take ownership of automation across both service-level and cross-service testing.
You’ll ensure each service is well-tested in isolation while also building robust integration and end-to-end test strategies that validate how services interact across the system. This is a high-impact role focused on improving reliability, accelerating development velocity, and embedding quality into the engineering culture.
  What you'll do:

Design and implement automated testing strategies for a distributed microservices architecture

Build and maintain service-level (unit + integration) automated tests for TypeScript/Node.js services

Develop cross-service integration tests to validate APIs, contracts, and workflows

Create and evolve reusable automation frameworks for backend and API testing

Integrate tests into CI/CD pipelines to provide fast, reliable feedback

Collaborate with engineers to embed testing into the development lifecycle

Identify gaps in coverage and drive improvements in system reliability

Troubleshoot flaky tests, distributed system issues, and test environment challenges
  What You Bring:
4+ years of experience in an automation-focused role (SDET, QA Automation Engineer, or similar)
Strong experience testing backend systems and microservices architectures
Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and experience with Node.js services  Strong proficiency in TypeScript and/or C#; experience in Python or Go is a plus Working knowledge in Postman API.
Hands-on experience with automation tools/frameworks (e.g., Jest, Mocha, Playwright, Supertest, or similar)
Experience with API, integration, and contract testing (e.g., Pact or similar)
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, etc.)
Solid understanding of distributed systems (service dependencies, retries, eventual consistency)
Ability to operate independently and take ownership of ambiguous problems
Nice to have: experience with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ), Docker/Kubernetes, Test containers, observability tools, and performance testing    Growth & Impact  This role starts with a strong focus on building a scalable automation foundation across our services. As that foundation matures and becomes embedded within the team’s workflows, ownership of automation will increasingly shift to the broader engineering team.  Over time, this role is expected to evolve into a more traditional Software Engineer position, with opportunities to:
Build and ship backend features
Contribute directly to service development
Help maintain and extend the automation ecosystem as a shared team responsibility

We’re looking for someone who is excited to lead the automation effort early and grow into a broader engineering role as the team scales.
