What is a Software Engineer In Test?

A Software Engineer In Test (SET) is a professional who specializes in developing and maintaining automated tests and testing frameworks to ensure software quality. Unlike traditional testers, SETs are skilled in programming and work closely with development teams to design testable software, automate repetitive testing tasks, and identify bugs early in the development cycle. Their main goal is to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and coverage of software testing processes, often contributing to both code quality and faster release cycles.

What are some common challenges faced by Software Engineers In Test when collaborating with development teams?

Software Engineers In Test (SETs) often face the challenge of ensuring their testing processes keep pace with rapid development cycles. Coordinating closely with developers is essential to identify potential issues early and to align on testing priorities. Communication gaps can sometimes lead to misunderstandings about requirements or missed edge cases, so proactive collaboration is key. Additionally, SETs may need to advocate for sufficient time for thorough test automation, balancing quality with project deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer in Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer in Test, you need a solid background in computer science, strong programming skills (often in Java, Python, or similar languages), and experience with automated testing frameworks. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, and CI/CD systems, as well as knowledge of test management platforms, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication are critical soft skills that help you design effective test cases and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure that software products are reliable, scalable, and meet quality standards before release.

Job Description

AC/BT’s mission is to deliver industry‑leading Contact Centre capabilities through cutting‑edge technology solutions.

We’re seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our Quality Engineering (QE) team and drive automation excellence for AI‑powered agentic applications.

As a hands‑on Senior SDET, you’ll focus on designing and implementing automation solutions to ensure the reliability and intelligence of our next‑gen systems. Collaborate in an Agile environment to tackle complex testing challenges, from prompt engineering to end‑to‑end validation. Elevate quality, drive innovation, and make a direct impact on the company’s client experience.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement tests across all levels (unit, integration, end‑to‑end), providing expertise on automation procedures, schedules, and risk mitigation.
  • Lead test strategy execution: Drive development of test specifications, data analysis, and timelines to ensure on‑time delivery.
  • Build automated test solutions using tools like Selenium, Cucumber, JMeter, and TestNG to enhance efficiency and coverage.
  • Analyze requirements and system behavior: Create data flow diagrams and define boundary conditions to maximize test coverage.
  • Manage test lifecycle: Oversee test execution, defect tracking, and results storage while adhering to agreed processes.
  • Support all test activities: Enhance, develop, and execute both manual and automated test scripts, recording and tracking software discrepancies to ensure thorough issue resolution.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally: Partner with stakeholders and developers to ensure comprehensive testing, reliability, and performance.
  • Mentor SDETs: Guide teams on methodologies, coding standards, and best practices through code reviews and test plan design.
  • Document and structure knowledge: Ensure test cases and domain expertise are clearly articulated for seamless team execution.
  • Integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines: Embed tests for functional/non‑functional validation, monitor results, and resolve issues with developers.
Qualifications – Must Have
  • 5+ years of Quality Engineering experience in diverse environments (cloud, distributed, mainframe, APIs, databases), with a proven ability to resolve complex cross‑functional issues.
  • 3–5 years of hands‑on automation experience, designing efficient test strategies to reduce manual testing and covering component, integration, and end‑to‑end scenarios.
  • Expertise in testing Agentic applications using LLMs and prompt engineering techniques.
  • DevOps proficiency in CI/CD, GitHub Actions, ALM, JIRA, and qTest.
  • Automation tools expertise in Selenium, Robot Framework, and SOAPUI.
  • Programming skills in Python, Java, C#, SQL, Groovy, PowerShell, and source control tools (Git).
  • Experience in Agile/Iterative Waterfall, defining test strategies, and reviewing artifacts (code, automation scripts).
  • Knowledge of Service Virtualization (RIT, Wiremock), test data management, and non‑SQL databases (MongoDB, PostgreSQL).
Qualifications – Nice to Have
  • Contact Centre technology experience.
