What is a software engineer co op?
What are software engineer co op positions?
Students studying to be software engineers often look for internship and training opportunities. As a software engineer co-op, you work with today’s latest and greatest technologies, researching Database Theory, JavaScript, CSS3, HTML5, and more. Your responsibilities are those of a student and intern, and you research and develop software. Your duties may include completing a project, assisting engineers, or shadowing them to develop the skills necessary for entering the workforce. Co-op positions often last for a term of one year. Students almost always receive pay for these positions that either provide credit or a pass/fail grade.
What types of projects and responsibilities can a software engineer co op expect during their placement?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer co op, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Software Engineer Co Op vs Software Developer Intern?
| Aspect | Software Engineer Co Op | Software Developer Intern |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically pursuing or holding a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field | Usually students in similar fields, often at an earlier stage of their education |
| Work Environment | Full-time or part-time cooperative work, often integrated with academic schedule | Internship, often part-time or summer-only |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used by tech companies for ongoing cooperative programs, often in software development teams | Commonly used by companies for short-term internship roles in software development |
The main difference is that a Software Engineer Co Op is a longer-term, often semester-based cooperative position that integrates with academic programs, while a Software Developer Intern is typically a shorter-term internship, often during summer, focused on gaining initial industry experience.

• Work with a variety of programming languages depending on the project (examples: Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++, Go, Rust, Swift, Kotlin, or others).
• Help build user interfaces using frameworks like React or contribute to back-end services and APIs.
• Use Git and other version‑control and collaboration tools.
• Work with cloud and container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and REST APIs.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, and technical discussions.
• Explore emerging technologies, including AI/ML, automation, and cloud-native development.

• Eligible candidates should also be available to join IBM in a full‑time role between December 2027 and August 2028 upon successful completion of their degree.
• By applying to this requisition, you acknowledge and agree to be considered for any of the listed locations associated with this position and are willing to work at the location where you are ultimately assigned.
• • Must be actively enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program at the time of application and returning to complete the degree after the co-op.
• • Available to start full-time between December 2027 and August 2028.
• • Available to work full-time (40 hours/week) at an IBM location for 16 weeks between Jan 19 - May 7.
• • Co-op requires a full-time commitment; students should not be enrolled in concurrent coursework during the co-op term.
• • Coursework or project experience in software development using any programming language.
• • Familiarity with fundamental concepts such as data structures, basic algorithms, or debugging.
• • Exposure to front-end or back-end technologies (React, Node.js, Python, Java, SQL, etc.).
• • Experience using Git or similar version control tools.
• • Interest in cloud computing, containers, or modern deployment practices.
• • Strong analytical thinking, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
