Hybrid
Freedman HealthCare LLC (FHC) is a growing Massachusetts-based consulting firm with a national footprint. We have helped more than 25 states build and use healthcare data to improve care quality, affordability, and equity. We aim to be the partner of choice for policymakers and changemakers who use data to transform healthcare and promote health, wellbeing, and justice. Freedman HealthCare is an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and growing consultancy with a culture of teamwork, open communication, and meeting exacting standards.
Job Summary:
The Data Engineer I supports healthcare analytics and data engineering projects through development of SQL workflows, reporting solutions, data transformations, and analytic datasets. This is a hybrid role that combines analytics, reporting, and technical data management responsibilities in a collaborative consulting environment.
Working closely with analysts, consultants, health policy experts, and healthcare stakeholders, you will support projects focused on healthcare quality, affordability, access, and equity. Responsibilities may include developing SQL queries, validating and transforming healthcare data, supporting dashboards and reporting deliverables, maintaining ETL workflows, and assisting with development of scalable analytic datasets and data structures.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong analytical mindset who enjoys both problem solving and technical data work, and who is interested in growing across both healthcare analytics and data engineering disciplines.
This is a hybrid position with two days per week in-office in downtown Providence, Rhode Island (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and three remote days (subject to change).
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines, ETL processes, and workflows to collect, clean, and transform data from various sources into usable formats
  • Ensure data integrity, quality, and accuracy throughout the data processing lifecycle
  • Analyze and interpret health insurance exchange data and related datasets to identify patterns, trends, and insights
  • Generate reports, dashboards, and visualizations to communicate findings effectively to non-technical stakeholders
  • Design, develop, and maintain databases, data models, and schemas for efficient storage and retrieval of data
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into data solutions
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in data analysis, engineering, and visualization
  • Identify opportunities to improve data infrastructure, processes, and analytics capabilities

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of health insurance, health insurance exchanges, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), customer service, and outreach
  • Knowledge of US healthcare policy, trends, and factors such as eligibility, utilization, cost, and equity
  • Knowledge of state government role in healthcare
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and data analysis, within Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle SQL Developer, and PL/SQL environments
  • Experience with Tableau and Excel experience with Power BI or similar visualization platforms preferred
  • Proficiency in data profiling, manipulation, and transformation using tools such as Pandas, Python, or similar
  • Experience working with cloud or warehouse platforms such as Amazon Redshift preferred
  • Familiarity with additional database platforms and data environments is a plus
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, with keen attention to detail
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities, with the capacity to present complex findings in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced consulting environment

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in healthcare administration, data science, statistics, or equivalent work experience preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in healthcare analytics, reporting, or related technical roles preferred
  • Experience working with healthcare claims or health insurance exchange data preferred

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Note:
  • Vaccination for COVID-19 is required and FHC will consider accommodations for disability- and religious-based reasons.
  • The job description provided above is a general outline and may be subject to modifications based on specific organizational requirements.
