You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Job description

The Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) Instance Networking team owns the packet pipeline that powers networking for every EC2 instance. Our software defined networking powers features like Virtual Private Cloud ("VPC"), features like firewalling (security groups), novel performance and scaling innovations and even billing and monitoring. Our vision is to combine the performance of bare metal networking while maintaining all the benefits of the cloud, to deliver features not possible on bare metal i.e

true Software Defined Networking (SDN).
We are looking for a world-class technical leader (Sr. Software Development Manager) to manage multiple teams and strategic initiatives for EC2 instance networking in Seattle, WA or San Diego, CA.
We are builders, focused on the next generation of our instance networking platform: the packet pipeline, the Elastic Network Adapter (ENA), and the embedded software that runs directly on Nitro cards

We work side by side with Annapurna Labs on the Nitro cards of the future.
This is a leadership role with real surface area. You will lead multiple teams, set technical strategy for EC2 instance networking, and partner with Principal Engineers, Senior Managers, and executives on requirements and direction that reach across all of Amazon. The problems are hard, the scope is company-wide, and the work is visible to the most senior leaders at AWS

We work on problems that matter, and we have a good time doing it. If that sounds like you, we want to talk.
Key job responsibilities
As a Senior Software Development Manager, you will:
Own the technical and product vision for a foundational layer of AWS infrastructure.
Partner with leaders and executives across the company to understand diverse requirements, set priorities, and drive direction across organizational boundaries.
Hire, grow, and lead a team of Software Development Managers and engineers; mentor and coach them toward their next level.
Build a team culture people want to be part of and take career growth seriously.
Own the operational health of your team's security, availability, and performance.
Run a development process that ships meaningful improvements to customers continuously.
Set the engineering bar: design, implementation, testing, version control, documentation, deployment, monitoring, and operations.
A day in the life
You will work on problems that don't have textbook answers. How do you process packets at line rate on a resource-constrained Nitro card - handling encapsulation, security-group enforcement, and metering - without adding latency a customer could ever notice

How do you roll out memory-safety and packet-integrity improvements across millions of hosts worldwide without dropping a single customer's packet. You will take ideas from a whiteboard sketch through requirements, design, and launch, and you will see them run at a scale almost nowhere else can offer.
About the team
We are a team with a wide range of experience and tenure, and we invest in bringing new members up to speed. Knowledge sharing and mentorship are part of how we work, not an afterthought

We think about each engineer's growth when we assign projects, matching people to work that stretches them toward what they want to do next.
