Software Engineer 3
Location (Hybrid): Westford, MA
HPE is seeking a Software Engineer 3 to join our Networking Engineering team in Westford, MA. In this role, you will contribute to the development, validation, and testing of next-generation networking software solutions that power enterprise, data center, and service provider environments.
You will collaborate closely with Software Development, Test Engineering, and Product teams to design comprehensive test strategies, develop automation frameworks, validate new features, and ensure high-quality software releases. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex networking challenges, building scalable test automation, and working across the full software development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, troubleshoot, and validate software enhancements and new networking features.
  • Lead software testing efforts, including feature qualification, scale, migration, certification, interoperability, and end-to-end solution testing.
  • Analyze network topologies, technical specifications, RFCs, and design documentation to develop comprehensive test plans.
  • Partner with Software Development and Test Engineering teams to evaluate test coverage, identify gaps, and improve overall product quality.
  • Design customer-focused test plans based on real-world deployment scenarios and solution requirements.
  • Develop, execute, and automate test cases using industry-standard automation frameworks and scripting languages.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, document, and track software defects through resolution while collaborating with engineering teams.
  • Contribute to the design and enhancement of automated test frameworks, tools, and infrastructure.
  • Provide detailed technical analysis for software defects, including root cause analysis, workarounds, and recommendations.
  • Communicate project status, testing progress, and technical findings with engineering teams, product management, and other stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, software testing, or networking technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking fundamentals, including:
    • TCP
    • UDP
    • IPv4
    • IPv6
  • Experience developing and maintaining automated test frameworks.
  • Hands-on programming or scripting experience with:
    • Python
    • Perl
    • Robot Framework
    • or similar automation technologies
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies and software testing best practices.
  • Experience writing and executing functional, regression, integration, system, and performance test plans.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and debugging skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional engineering teams.
