What does a software development manager do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Their role balances technical expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development manager?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, leadership experience, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and mentor teams are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, foster team development, and align technical efforts with business goals.

How does a software development manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

Job description

Software Engineer

The Opportunity:

As a full stack developer on this team, you will resolve complex problems with complete end to end solutions in a fast paced, agile environment. If you are looking for the chance to do more than just write code and instead want to build a system that makes a tangible difference, we need you. We are searching for an experienced developer who has the skills and the drive to move a project from its initial vision all the way to a production ready state. This is a role for someone who wants to see their work transition from a digital environment into the physical world where operational impact is the only metric that truly counts.

The typical problem set serves Department of War research and development initiatives, taking concepts from the early stages to Technical Readiness and beyond on major weapon system platforms. This means your work will move past the laboratory and onto operationally representative systems. We are interested in people who can think and solve problems at multiple levels, often reaching outside of the standard technology stack to understand how software interacts with unique hardware and mission critical environments.

On this team, you will operate within a sophisticated Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) ecosystem where every software and hardware component is anchored in a unified digital model. While the ability to directly author these high-level system models is a valuable asset, you will at a minimum be expected to work fluently with the complex data models that emerge from this architecture and participate in the systems engineering processes that encapsulate the model. This data centric approach allows us to autogenerate specifications and design artifacts that drive early interface definition and drastically reduce integration risk.

Critically, our team is evaluated based on actual results in the field rather than simply ticking off boxes or completing administrative checklists. We prioritize functional excellence and real-world performance over bureaucratic compliance. Your success will be measured by how your software performs in the hands of the operator during a mission, ensuring that our technological solutions provide a decisive advantage in the most demanding environments. This result-oriented culture ensures that we remain focused on the mission, delivering modular and sustainable systems that allow the Department of War to adapt at the speed of software.

Work with us as we shape systems for the better.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 5+ years of experience developing containerized microservices using Kubernetes
  • 3+ years of experience with Agile software development
  • 3+ years of experience with Cloud software pipeline development, such as Gitlab, GitHub, and Atlassian
  • Experience with secure coding techniques
  • Experience with technical writing, including slide presentation development
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience software development, or 10+ years of experience in software development in lieu of degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with IEEE systems engineering gates and documents
  • Experience with Defense projects
  • Experience with Test-driven development
  • Experience with Agentic AI tools
  • Knowledge of SOSA System or Health Management, and IPMI
  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • TS/SCI clearance
  • CompTIA Security+ certification

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Secret clearance required.
