How does a software development manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

What does a software development manager do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

  • Build proof-of-concepts and reference implementations to accelerate adoption of new technologies and engineering practices.
  • Evaluate and introduce emerging technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices that improve delivery effectiveness, software quality, and developer productivity.
  • Perform code reviews and establish engineering standards, design patterns, and development best practices.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical and production issues, providing hands-on guidance and resolution.
  • Support production systems and drive operational excellence through incident management, root cause analysis, monitoring, and performance optimization.
  • Contribute to disaster recovery, security, compliance, and operational resiliency initiatives.
  • Partner with product team to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Own project planning, estimation, execution, risk management, dependency tracking and stakeholder alignment.
  • Mentor engineers and foster technical excellence across the team.

What We Look For

  • Strong hands-on experience with .NET, C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server, RESTful APIs, Angular and distributed systems
  • Strong architecture and system design experience including API-first, microservices and cloud native architectures.
  • Proven experience modernizing monolithic applications and evolving them towards cloud-native and service-oriented architectures.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, enterprise integration patterns, scalability and resiliency.
  • Experience with DevOps practices including CI/CD, GitHub and/or GitLab, Terraform, containerization, and infrastructure automation.
  • Experience with security remediation, compliance initiatives, and highly regulated environments.
  • Proven ability to deliver complex technology initiatives from conception through production deployment.
  • Strong project planning, execution, stakeholder management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
