How does a software development manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

What does a software development manager do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Their role balances technical expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development manager?

Senior Business Analyst

USG Insurance Services, Inc.

  • Hybrid, or in-office — flexible based on your location and preference
  • Location: Canonsburg, PA
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Who We Are

USG is a national wholesale broker and managing general agent (MGA), writing business in all 50 states across a network of 400+ markets. We've been ranked a 5-star MGA by Insurance Business America for four consecutive years and named a Top Insurance Workplace for five years running, as voted by our own team. Our in-house IT development and support teams, based in Canonsburg, PA, manage both proprietary and third-party systems that keep our sales operations at the leading edge of the industry.

The Role

The Senior Business Analyst is the key connection between the business and the software development team — someone with a deep understanding of business processes who can see how technology solves problems the business is facing now or may face in the future. This is a role for someone energetic and ambitious who enjoys direct interaction with both business stakeholders and technical teams, and who can translate between the two fluently.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as key liaison between the business and IT/development teams
  • Analyze complex business problems and assess how technology may solve them
  • Recommend solutions — new features, new software, or software updates
  • Formalize the objectives and scope of business systems (project planning and startup)
  • Consult with the business to develop project requirements and Business Requirements Documentation (BRD)
  • Develop user acceptance test plans with the business for new software or major enhancements
  • Support solution design by contributing at design sessions, helping translate requirements into workable business solutions
  • Recommend additional data or services needed to address key business issues; research third-party solutions as needed
  • Adhere to SDLC standards; work with external partners and vendors as needed
  • Support UAT execution, post-implementation support, and test case execution
  • Act as liaison between business and development to manage requests for additional scope or process changes
  • Bridge business and IT during major issues, and provide ongoing support to the business as key issues arise
  • Stay current on business processes, strategy, and related system solutions to support continuous improvement
  • Participate in system design and configuration activities; translate functional/business specs into technical specs with the technical team
  • Develop customer-focused documentation for software solutions (e.g., wireframes, use cases, business rules)

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of relevant Business Analyst experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Computer Science, MIS, or a related field
  • Experience interacting with executive leadership and software development teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills — able to convey business requirements and technical needs clearly and concisely
  • Excellent client and interpersonal skills; work effectively with internal and external partners
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable self-managing with ownership of your work

Preferred

  • Insurance industry experience, ideally in P&C Insurance or InsurTech (underwriting or sales background also relevant)
  • Curiosity and hands-on experience using AI tools to streamline BA deliverables and a willingness to explore new ways AI can improve speed and quality of analysis work
  • Experience with JIRA
  • Experience with SQL or other report-writing tools
  • Familiarity with data mapping for API interfaces
  • Experience working with offshore teams
  • Experience working in a cloud environment such as AWS

What USG Offers

  • Comprehensive benefits: company-paid Short-Term & Long-Term Disability, Basic Life, AD&D, and Team Member Assistance Program
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Flexible Spending Account and Dependent Care FSA
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • A week of hands-on, in-person training with our corporate team
  • 24/7 virtual training through USG University
  • Generous paid time off and company holiday schedule
  • Room for significant growth within the company
