What does a software development contractor do?

A Software Development Contractor is an independent professional hired to design, develop, and implement software solutions for clients on a project or temporary basis. They may work with various programming languages, frameworks, and technologies depending on the client's needs. Contractors are responsible for delivering specific project outcomes, often collaborating with in-house teams, and may also provide ongoing support or maintenance. Their work arrangement typically allows for greater flexibility compared to full-time employees, but they are usually responsible for their own business operations, such as taxes and contracts.

How does the workflow and communication process typically differ for software development contractors compared to full-time employees?

As a software development contractor, you’ll likely experience more autonomy in your workflow but will need to be proactive in communication since you may not be embedded within the core team. Contractors often attend regular check-ins or stand-ups virtually and coordinate with project managers or technical leads to track deliverables. You may work across multiple projects or teams, so adapting quickly to different coding standards and collaboration tools is essential. Clear documentation and timely progress updates are important for ensuring alignment and meeting client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Contractor, you need strong programming skills, experience with software design and development methodologies, and typically a relevant degree or proven work history. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and frameworks relevant to client needs is crucial, along with knowledge of Agile or Scrum methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you adapt to diverse client environments and deliver quality solutions independently. These competencies ensure you can efficiently meet client expectations, deliver robust software, and maintain professional relationships in a contract-based role.

Job description

About Blitzy

Blitzy is an AI software development platform on a mission to revolutionize the software development life cycle by autonomously building custom software to unlock the next industrial revolution. We’re transforming how enterprises build software, turning enterprise requirements into production-ready code with an agentic software development platform that can autonomously execute 80% of the quantum of software development work. We’re backed by multiple tier 1 investors, and have proven success as founders of previous start-ups.

The Program

The Blitzy Builder Program is a network of enterprise developers who build real software with Blitzy on nights and weekends, capture the process on video, and publish it to their own YouTube channel.

You build what you want, on your own time as long as it is with Blitzy. We pay you to do it and to show how it went. You work with Blitzy marketing for theme identification and guidance, editorial control is yours. Your channel, your audience, and the content are yours to keep entirely.

This role is for those who develop software for a living at large enterprises, have the curiosity to push an autonomous development platform on hard problems, and are genuinely excited to build in public. No creator experience required.

What You’ll DoBuild Real Projects With Blitzy
  • Use Blitzy to build real software. Pick projects you actually care about, ideally the kind of enterprise problem you would tackle at work. This should be no more than five to eight hours a week, nights and weekends.

  • Push the platform on hard problems. Reverse-engineer a legacy system, refactor across a large codebase, or stand up something new, and show what autonomous development can do.

  • Work with Blitzy marketing and join 2, 30-minute calls a month for guidance.

Publish To Your Own Channel
  • Publish 1-2, 5+ minute videos per month capture your build process, the journey of building with Blitzy and the end result on YouTube to your personal channel.

  • Build in your own voice. The channel and the audience you grow stay yours.

  • You are not required in any way to discuss your primary employer or any work you do outside of the Blitzy Builder Program.

(Optional) Promote Platform
  • Share your work with a unique attribution link. Free plan signups and qualified meetings that come through your link put you on the program leaderboard.

  • Top the leaderboard and earn monthly bonuses on top of your base. ($2k per month for the top performers)

What We’re Looking For
  • Real enterprise development experience. You work at an enterprise with fewer than 10,000 employees and you have shipped production software inside this organization.

  • Genuine excitement to build. You already spend free time tinkering, building things, and you are naturally curious and want to build more.

  • No creator experience required. No following, no editing reel, no on-camera background. We care that the work is real and that you can show it clearly.

  • Comfort publishing consistently. One video a month, every month.

  • Independence. You manage your own time and ship without anyone managing the process.

  • Bonus points if you work in financial services, insurance, healthcare, telecom, or enterprise SaaS.

Compensation
  • $2,000 per month, paid as a 1099 contractor.

  • Two additional $10,000 monthly bonuses, awarded through a leaderboard that tracks the free plan signups and qualified meetings driven by your unique attribution link. Earn both and the month is $30,000.

  • Early, direct access to Blitzy and the team building it.

  • Slack channel with other builders
