What is a software developer?

A Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains computer programs or applications. They use programming languages to create software solutions that meet user needs, whether for desktop, mobile, or web platforms. Software Developers work closely with other team members such as designers, analysts, and testers to ensure the final product is functional, reliable, and user-friendly. Their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to collaborating on system architecture and deploying updates.

What do software developers do?

Software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Their job is to apply the principles of engineering, analytics, and computer science toward the development and testing of all kinds of software and applications. On a day-to-day basis, a software developer helps create and test software from start to finish. They discuss and analyze user requests and requirements, then research and brainstorm practical solutions to meet those needs, and determine the best course of action to create the application. As a software developer, you may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one; you are responsible for a program’s overall framework and must design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks like React or .NET is typically required, along with knowledge of agile methodologies or certifications. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on team-based projects?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members across different time zones, managing code integration from multiple contributors, and maintaining clear communication about project requirements. Effective use of version control systems like Git and regular participation in code reviews can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, adapting to evolving project goals and balancing technical debt with feature development are common hurdles that require strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Job Description:
DevOps Engineer
Location: Remote (EST Hours)
Contract-to-hire
Pay Rate: $60-75/hour on w2 basis
Job Summary
Apex Systems is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join a product engineering organization building a next-generation, cloud-based B2B SaaS platform.
This role will serve as the bridge between Development and Infrastructure, ensuring the platform is designed for scalability, automation, security, observability, and operational excellence from day one. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience building and supporting cloud-native applications while helping establish the deployment and operational foundations for a new multi-tenant SaaS product.
The Senior DevOps Engineer will partner closely with engineering, infrastructure, product, security, and support teams to ensure environments are reliable, repeatable, and built for growth.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical bridge between Development and Infrastructure teams.
  • Lead infrastructure-focused design discussions and provide real-world deployment expertise during product development.
  • Help architect and support a cloud-native, multi-tenant SaaS platform.
  • Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting product releases and customer deployments.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code solutions for repeatable and scalable environments.
  • Automate manual infrastructure and operational processes to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Design and support containerized workloads and orchestration platforms.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability across production environments.
  • Ensure security best practices are embedded throughout the infrastructure and application lifecycle.
  • Partner with engineering leadership to ensure applications are designed for availability, scalability, and supportability.
  • Train and enable infrastructure teams on deployment processes, automation, and operational best practices.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues spanning networking, infrastructure, applications, and data flow.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for environments, processes, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation supporting production systems.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure.
  • Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Bicep, or similar technologies.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines and release automation.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration platforms.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as New Relic, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar tools.
  • Experience with configuration management solutions such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
  • Strong automation and scripting skills using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar languages.
  • Strong networking knowledge including routing, firewalls, load balancing, reverse proxies, and traffic flow analysis.
  • Deep understanding of infrastructure and application security principles.
  • Familiarity with SQL and data warehousing concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across multiple technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting and scaling customer-facing B2B SaaS products.
  • Experience supporting highly available, multi-tenant SaaS environments.
  • Software development experience beyond administrative scripting.
  • Experience building deployment automation for commercial software products.
  • Experience working in environments where Development and Infrastructure collaborate throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Experience transitioning products from development through production deployment and operational support.
What Success Looks Like
  • The platform is designed for deployment, scalability, security, and supportability from the beginning.
  • Customer environments can be deployed, upgraded, and maintained through reliable automation.
  • Development and Infrastructure teams operate with shared accountability and minimal handoff friction.
  • Monitoring, security, and observability are built into the platform rather than added later.
  • Internal teams are equipped to support and scale the platform as adoption grows.
Ideal Candidate Profile
This role is ideal for a hands-on DevOps professional who understands both software delivery and infrastructure operations. The successful candidate can operate comfortably across applications, cloud infrastructure, networking, automation, and production support while bringing a practical approach to solving problems.
They are highly collaborative, technically curious, strong communicators, and capable of helping a growing product organization build the operational foundation required to support a modern SaaS platform at scale.
