What is a software developer?

A Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains computer programs or applications. They use programming languages to create software solutions that meet user needs, whether for desktop, mobile, or web platforms. Software Developers work closely with other team members such as designers, analysts, and testers to ensure the final product is functional, reliable, and user-friendly. Their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to collaborating on system architecture and deploying updates.

What do software developers do?

Software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Their job is to apply the principles of engineering, analytics, and computer science toward the development and testing of all kinds of software and applications. On a day-to-day basis, a software developer helps create and test software from start to finish. They discuss and analyze user requests and requirements, then research and brainstorm practical solutions to meet those needs, and determine the best course of action to create the application. As a software developer, you may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one; you are responsible for a program’s overall framework and must design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks like React or .NET is typically required, along with knowledge of agile methodologies or certifications. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on team-based projects?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members across different time zones, managing code integration from multiple contributors, and maintaining clear communication about project requirements. Effective use of version control systems like Git and regular participation in code reviews can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, adapting to evolving project goals and balancing technical debt with feature development are common hurdles that require strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.

The Software Developer is also expected to follow company safety practices and policies.

Important job responsibilities:

  • Develop, enhance, and maintain internal and external web-based applications.
  • Design, write, test, debug, and document application code.
  • Write and maintain unit tests and support application testing and quality assurance.
  • Work on development tickets, enhancements, production issues, and end-user requests.
  • Troubleshoot application issues and provide ongoing support for existing systems.
  • Partner with business users and other team members to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Assist with project analysis, technical planning, application design, and architecture decisions.
  • Deliver well-written, maintainable code while meeting project deadlines and business needs.
  • Participate in code reviews and follow established development standards and best practices.
  • Use source control and standard software development lifecycle processes.
  • Follow change management and production deployment processes.
  • Stay current with software development practices, tools, frameworks, and emerging technologies.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to support coding, debugging, refactoring, testing, documentation, research, and other development activities.
  • Evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, maintainability, performance, and alignment with internal development standards.
  • Use AI coding agents and agent-based workflows appropriately to complete development tasks while maintaining developer ownership and review of the final solution.

What we're looking for in you:

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience is ideal.
  • Proficiency with modern .NET and C# development.
  • Experience developing web applications using ASP.NET MVC and/or ASP.NET Core.
  • Experience with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, and related web technologies.
  • Experience designing, consuming, and troubleshooting REST APIs and web services.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand SQL queries and work with relational databases such as SQL Server and Oracle.
  • Good understanding of object-oriented programming, software design principles, and common design patterns.
  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging application, integration, and data-related issues.
  • Experience using Git or another source-control platform as part of a team development workflow.
  • Experience using modern development environments and editors, including Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code.
  • Experience with content management systems; experience with headless CMS platforms such as Contentful is preferred.
  • Experience using AI-assisted software development tools such as OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with AI coding workflows such as providing project context, writing effective development prompts, reviewing generated code, iterating on solutions, and using AI to assist with testing and documentation.
  • Familiarity with coding agents, agent-based development workflows, reusable instructions or skills, and tools that can analyze or make changes across a codebase.
  • Ability to determine when AI-generated solutions are appropriate and independently validate generated code before it is incorporated into production applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn new technologies, applications, and development approaches quickly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical team members.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant technical experience.

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Experience with .NET 8 or newer versions of .NET.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated application deployments.
  • Experience with cloud-hosted applications and services.
  • Experience creating automated tests beyond unit testing, including integration or API tests.
  • Experience using AI coding agents for multi-step development tasks such as codebase analysis, implementation, test generation, refactoring, and documentation.
  • Experience creating or maintaining reusable AI development instructions, agent configurations, prompts, skills, or workflows for a software development team.
  • Familiarity with secure and responsible use of AI tools, including protecting confidential information and reviewing generated code for security and licensing concerns.
