What is a software developer manager?

A Software Developer Manager is a professional who leads and oversees a team of software developers, guiding them through the design, development, and maintenance of software applications. They are responsible for managing project timelines, setting goals, and ensuring the team delivers high-quality code. In addition to technical expertise, they must possess strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to effectively coordinate between their team and other departments. Their role also often includes mentoring developers, conducting performance reviews, and helping to shape the overall technical strategy of the organization.

How does a software developer manager typically balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

A Software Developer Manager often splits their time between technical tasks and managerial duties. While they may participate in code reviews, technical planning, and occasionally contribute code, a significant portion of their role involves mentoring team members, facilitating collaboration, and aligning projects with business objectives. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and delegation skills, as well as the ability to adapt to the needs of both the team and the organization. This hybrid focus allows manager-developers to stay technically engaged while guiding the team's growth and productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer manager, and why are they important?

A Software Developer Manager needs a strong background in software engineering, leadership experience, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and methodologies like Agile or Scrum is essential, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, team-building, and problem-solving skills help leaders motivate teams and resolve conflicts effectively. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, foster innovation, and maintain high team morale in dynamic tech environments.

Engineering Manager – Mobile Controls

Modesto, CA | Onsite
Full-Time, Exempt

The Opportunity

MCDS is looking for a hands-on engineer who is ready to take the next step into engineering leadership. This role leads a small multidisciplinary engineering team while remaining actively involved in the technical work. You’ll help design, troubleshoot, review, test, and bring mobile-control solutions from concept through production. Prior formal management experience is preferred, but not required. Strong engineers who have successfully led project teams, mentored others, and are ready for broader responsibility may also be a good fit.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and develop a small engineering team supporting electrical, software, and mobile-control system development.
  • Remain hands-on in the design, troubleshooting, testing, and integration of low-voltage DC electronic control systems.
  • Lead projects from customer requirements and system design through documentation, testing, and production readiness.
  • Review electrical schematics, drawings, and system designs for technical accuracy, quality, and manufacturability.
  • Work closely with customers, sales, vendors, and production personnel to solve technical problems and deliver practical solutions.
  • Help improve engineering processes, project execution, quality, and team capability.

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of strong hands-on experience with electrical system design, electronic controls, troubleshooting, testing, and system integration.
  • Experience successfully leading multiple engineering projects or project teams; prior formal people-management experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to create and/or critically review electrical schematics and CAD drawings.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and practical understanding of electrical engineering principles and diagnostic tools.
  • Experience with mobile equipment controls is strongly preferred; software or application-integration experience is a plus.

About MCDS and HCI
  • MCDS develops and manufactures integrated mobile machine-control solutions, including electrical control systems, wire harnesses, operator controls, electronic system integration, and related programming and documentation.
  • Become an owner! MCDS is part of Hydraulic Controls, Inc., a 100% employee-owned company serving customers throughout the Western United States.

Compensation & Benefits

The expected starting salary is $90,000 - $102,500 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. HCI offers medical, dental and vision coverage, 401(k) matching, paid time off and holidays, life and disability insurance, an Employee Assistance Program, and participation in HCI's Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

If you're a strong engineer who wants to stay close to the technical work while growing into a broader leadership role, we'd like to hear from you.
