How does a software developer manager typically balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

A Software Developer Manager often splits their time between technical tasks and managerial duties. While they may participate in code reviews, technical planning, and occasionally contribute code, a significant portion of their role involves mentoring team members, facilitating collaboration, and aligning projects with business objectives. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and delegation skills, as well as the ability to adapt to the needs of both the team and the organization. This hybrid focus allows manager-developers to stay technically engaged while guiding the team's growth and productivity.

What is a software developer manager?

A Software Developer Manager is a professional who leads and oversees a team of software developers, guiding them through the design, development, and maintenance of software applications. They are responsible for managing project timelines, setting goals, and ensuring the team delivers high-quality code. In addition to technical expertise, they must possess strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to effectively coordinate between their team and other departments. Their role also often includes mentoring developers, conducting performance reviews, and helping to shape the overall technical strategy of the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer manager, and why are they important?

A Software Developer Manager needs a strong background in software engineering, leadership experience, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and methodologies like Agile or Scrum is essential, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, team-building, and problem-solving skills help leaders motivate teams and resolve conflicts effectively. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, foster innovation, and maintain high team morale in dynamic tech environments.

About Our Organization

RIS Rx (pronounced “RISE”) is a healthcare technology organization with a strong imprint in the patient access and affordability space. RIS Rx has quickly become an industry leader in delivering impactful solutions to stakeholders across the healthcare continuum. RIS Rx is proud to offer an immersive service portfolio to help address common access barriers. We don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach to our service offerings. Our philosophy is to bring forward innovation, value and service to everything that we do. This approach has allowed us to have the opportunity to serve countless patients to help produce better treatment outcomes and an overall improved quality of life. Here at RIS Rx, we invite our partners and colleagues to “Rise Up” with us to bring accessible healthcare and solutions for all.

Job Summary:
RIS Rx is seeking a hands-on Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of four to eight engineers building the platforms that identify and mitigate gross-to-net (GTN) revenue leakage for pharmaceutical manufacturers. This is a people-leadership role focused on the growth, delivery, and health of your team while staying close enough to the technology to guide sound decisions.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of four to eight engineers with regular 1:1s, feedback, career development, and performance management.
  • Own your team’s delivery: planning, prioritization, and execution against roadmap commitments, in partnership with product.
  • Be accountable for the quality, reliability, and on-call health of the systems your team owns.
  • Hire, onboard, and build a strong, inclusive team, setting a high bar for craft and collaboration.
  • Partner with product, operations, and other engineering teams to align priorities and remove blockers.
  • Stay technically engaged by joining design and code reviews enough to guide architecture and trade-offs, without being the primary individual contributor.
  • Foster sound handling of regulated data (PHI, partner contracts) and a culture of security and compliance.
  • Use the leveling framework to set clear expectations and support engineers’ growth toward the next level.
Skills
  • 2+ years managing software engineers, built on a strong foundation as a senior engineer.
  • A track record of shipping software and developing the people on your team.
  • Enough technical depth in our stack (Go, TypeScript, AWS, PostgreSQL) to engage credibly in technical decisions.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and prioritization skills.
  • Experience in healthcare, pharma, or another regulated, data-sensitive domain preferred.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
What we offer
  • Free gym membership
  • Modern office
  • Annual merit-based salary increases
  • 401(k) with annual company match
  • Medical - RIS Rx covers 100% of the employee’s base HMO medical plan
  • Voluntary Dental, Vision & Life Insurance
  • Flexible Savings Account (FSA)
  • Paid Holidays
  • Time off that grows with you:
  • 3 weeks PTO 0-2 years
  • 4 weeks PTO after 3+ years
  • 5 weeks PTO after 5+ years
  • Recognition programs that celebrate impact and results
  • Mentorship and coaching opportunities
  • Clear growth paths and career development support
  • Fully stocked snack kitchen
  • Company-paid lunches
