What is a software developer contract?

A Software Developer Contract job is a temporary or project-based position where a developer is hired for a specific duration, typically through a contract agreement. Contractors may work independently, for an agency, or directly with a company to develop, test, and maintain software applications. These roles often offer flexibility but may not include benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Contract developers are usually paid hourly or per project and may work remotely or on-site depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer contract?

A successful Software Developer Contract requires strong programming abilities, solid knowledge of software development methodologies, and relevant project or domain expertise, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as tools such as Git, Agile frameworks, and certification in areas like AWS or Scrum, is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, effective communication, and an ability to quickly integrate into new teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable contract developers to deliver high-quality solutions while efficiently navigating diverse projects and rapidly changing work environments.

What are the typical work arrangements and expectations for contract software developers?

Contract Software Developers are usually hired for specific projects or defined timeframes, which can range from several weeks to multiple months, often working remotely or on-site depending on client needs. They are expected to quickly understand project requirements, deliver code efficiently, and collaborate with both in-house teams and other contractors, maintaining flexibility to adapt to different workflows and tools. Because contract roles may not include the same onboarding experience as permanent positions, self-motivation and strong independent work habits are important. This work arrangement provides valuable exposure to various industries and technologies, often expanding a developer’s professional network and enhancing career versatility.

Are software developers still in high demand?

Yes, software developers remain in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation across industries, the need for new applications, and the growth of cloud computing and cybersecurity. Strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with experience in agile environments, enhance job prospects for contract software developers.

How much do contract software developers make?

Contract software developers typically earn between $50 and $150 per hour, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Rates can vary based on skills such as proficiency in specific programming languages, frameworks, and the duration of the contract.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Software Engineer - Full Stack .NET in Birmingham, AL.
Summary:
We are seeking a Software Engineer III to join an application development team focused on modernizing enterprise applications and addressing application security and vulnerability remediation. This is a hands-on full-stack .NET role involving legacy application modernization, migration from .NET Framework 4.8 to .NET Core, API and microservices development, database work, and modern containerized environments.
The ideal candidate is a strong .NET engineer who is comfortable working across both backend and frontend technologies and can contribute throughout the software development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:

* Develop and maintain SSRS reports and support SSIS data integration processes
* Troubleshoot application performance, production issues, and security vulnerabilities
* Work with containerized applications and modern development/deployment practices
* Participate in code reviews, testing, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement
* Collaborate with developers, architects, product owners, and other technical teams in an Agile environment
* Use Git and CI/CD practices to support reliable software delivery
REQUIREMENTS:
* 6-8+ years of professional software development experience

* Strong experience with .NET Core
* Strong C#/ASP.NET development experience
* Strong SQL Server experience
* Experience with JavaScript and jQuery
* Experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices
* Experience with ReactJS or comparable modern JavaScript frameworks
* Experience with SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services)
* Experience working with source control, preferably Git, and CI/CD practices
* Understanding of microservices architecture and web application development
* Strong troubleshooting and application performance skills
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with OpenShift

* Experience with Harness and modern CI/CD pipelines
* Experience with Apache Kafka
* Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, in addition to relational databases such as SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL
* Experience with Angular, Vue, or Node.js
* Experience with Python
* Experience with Splunk
* Experience in application security, vulnerability remediation, or secure software development
Why This Role:
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior-level full-stack engineer to work on meaningful enterprise modernization and application security initiatives while leveraging both established .NET technologies and newer cloud-native development practices.
