Software Developer Bootcamp information

What is a software developer bootcamp?

A Software Developer Bootcamp is an intensive, short-term training program designed to teach participants the fundamental skills needed to start a career in software development. These bootcamps typically focus on practical, hands-on learning in programming languages, frameworks, and tools used by professional developers. They are suitable for beginners or career changers and often include project-based learning, mentorship, and job placement support. Bootcamps can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the program's format and curriculum.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a software developer bootcamp, and how do these prepare me for real-world development roles?

During a Software Developer Bootcamp, you'll typically work on a variety of hands-on projects, such as building web applications, developing APIs, and creating mobile apps. These projects often simulate real-world scenarios and require collaboration with peers, using tools and methodologies commonly found in the industry, such as version control (Git), agile workflows, and code reviews. By working on these practical assignments, you'll not only strengthen your technical skills but also gain experience in teamwork, problem-solving, and adapting to new technologies—key aspects valued in professional software development roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer bootcamp graduate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer Bootcamp graduate, you need a strong grasp of programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and familiarity with software development methodologies. Proficiency with languages such as JavaScript or Python, experience using version control systems like Git, and knowledge of frameworks (e.g., React, Node.js) are typically required. Adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that help you learn quickly and collaborate in dynamic environments. These skills and qualities are essential for successfully transitioning into entry-level software development roles and contributing to fast-paced tech teams.

Job description

Are you a software developer with a passion for coding and collaboration? Join Kinsale Insurance, a fast-growing and successful excess and surplus (E&S) lines carrier headquartered in Richmond, VA. We foster a highly collaborative technology environment where developers work side by side with product teams and business stakeholders. If you thrive in a dynamic Agile setting and enjoy seeing the direct impact of your work, we want to hear from you.

About the Role

As a Full Stack Developer, you'll join one of our cross-functional Agile teams and contribute to the full lifecycle of enterprise applications, from design to deployment. You'll have the opportunity to leverage generative AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude Code) in day-to-day development to accelerate coding, automate repetitive tasks, and improve code quality and productivity. This role is ideal for a developer who is eager to deepen their architectural thinking and grow into increasing technical ownership over time.

What You'll Do
  • Delivering high-quality code and solutions that meet business requirements to support the Agile team's successful project delivery.
  • Contributing to the architecture and design of applications and services, aligning them with IT and business strategies.
  • Researching and evaluating alternative solutions to meet evolving business needs.
  • Adhering to established standards for security, testing, and development methodology.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, such as reducing duplicate code or streamlining processes.
  • Managing upstream and downstream dependencies across systems, teams, and environments to protect delivery timelines.
  • Breaking down complex business and technical problems into well-defined components that support parallel development and incremental delivery.
  • Collaborating with team members, technical resources, and business stakeholders to plan, design, develop, test, and maintain business applications.
  • Incorporating feedback from code reviews and design discussions to continuously grow technical depth and system understanding.
  • Actively participating in Agile ceremonies and contributing to continuous improvement of team processes.
What You Bring
  • Experience with Angular (v17 and above) and Java required.
  • Bootcamp certification or bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Exposure to full stack/enterprise applications with proficient knowledge in one or more areas.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodology preferred.
  • A curiosity for staying current on the latest trends and technologies, with an eye for practical opportunities to use them.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Java (Spring, Spring Boot, JPA, Docker, REST, SOAP, Hibernate), AWS SQS, AWS EKS, Python, Angular, Node.js, SQL, JSON, Kong, Confluent Kafka, and cloud technologies (preferably AWS) is a plus.
  • Experience with tools such as SonarCloud, Git, GitLab, Maven, Visual Studio Code, and IntelliJ, plus CI/CD practices, is a plus.
  • Experience using AI technologies (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) to enhance development and automation is highly desired.
Why You'll Love Working at Kinsale

  • Comprehensive Benefits – Health, dental, and vision insurance with up to $3,600 (individual) or $7,000 (family) in HSA contributions per year.
