Is 30 too old to get into consulting?

Software consulting is open to individuals of all ages, and many successful consultants start or transition into the field later in life. Relevant skills such as programming, problem-solving, and certifications can be gained at any age, and experience can be an asset in client interactions and project management.

What are some common challenges faced by software consultants when working with clients, and how can they be managed?

Software consultants often encounter challenges such as aligning client expectations with technical realities, managing shifting project requirements, and integrating solutions into existing workflows. Effective communication, setting clear deliverables, and maintaining flexibility are key to overcoming these issues. Additionally, building strong relationships with clients and stakeholders helps facilitate smoother collaboration and ensures project goals are met. Regular check-ins and transparent progress updates are also essential for managing expectations and adapting to changes throughout the project lifecycle.

What does a software consultant do?

A software consultant analyzes clients' needs and recommends technology solutions, often involving system design, implementation, and integration. They may also provide training, support, and project management to ensure successful deployment of software systems using tools like programming languages and development platforms.

What is software consulting?

Software consulting is a professional service where experts provide advice, solutions, and support to organizations seeking to improve, develop, or implement software systems. Software consultants analyze business needs, recommend technology solutions, assist with project planning, and may oversee software development or integration. Their goal is to help clients achieve operational efficiency, solve technical challenges, and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. Consultants often have experience in multiple industries and technologies, making them valuable for both short-term projects and long-term digital transformation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Consultant, you need a strong foundation in software development, problem-solving, and client requirement analysis, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages, cloud platforms, project management tools, and relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or PMP are often required. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and interpersonal skills help build client trust and manage changing project needs. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering effective technical solutions, ensuring client satisfaction, and maintaining successful long-term partnerships.

Can you make $500,000 as a software engineer?

Software engineers can earn $500,000 or more annually, primarily through senior roles, specialized skills, or working at large tech companies with stock options and bonuses. Achieving this level often requires extensive experience, advanced technical skills, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or entrepreneurial ventures.

About the Team

The Technical Insights Team is part of the Technology business unit within the Product Engineering delivery organization. The team delivers technology products by partnering closely with business stakeholders and engineering teams to define, prioritize, build, and continuously improve digital capabilities. Team members combine business analysis, Agile product ownership, and delivery leadership to translate business strategy into actionable product requirements, guide development teams through iterative delivery, and ensure solutions deliver measurable business value. The team also promotes continuous improvement by leveraging AI-enabled tools, automation, and Agile best practices throughout the product lifecycle.

What You'll Do

Crowe is looking to hire a Software Engineering Specialist into our Product Engineering practice to help build and modernize solutions for Crowe's Audit services. This is a high-impact role for an engineer who thrives on variety and ownership.

Unlike a traditional engineer embedded in a single Scrum team, this position is intentionally flexible. You will deploy to the highest-priority need across Audit's product portfolio and innovation initiatives, joining a team to deliver a critical feature, partnering with our innovation group to prototype what's next, or unblocking a stalled effort. This position will balance the various priorities with the stability needed to contribute and deliver.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise across the Microsoft stack, a real passion for software craftsmanship, and expertise applying AI to deliver business value.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver software for Audit's flagship products and innovation team to drive the discovery and delivery of high-value features that modernize how Crowe delivers Audits.

  • Ramp quickly into new teams and begin contributing meaningfully with minimal onboarding.

  • Engage with Agile Scrum teams for feature development and delivery, adapting to each team's cadence and conventions.

  • Leverage Azure PaaS services to deliver business value efficiently and at scale.

  • Build and integrate AI solutions that align with the quality and transparency needs of an Audit practice.

  • Use AI coding assistants to accelerate the rate at which you, and your team, deliver value.

  • Collaborate with Audit practitioners and product teams to refine requirements and translate business needs into sound technical solutions.

  • Consult with teams and Architects to build consensus on architectural approaches.

  • Embrace a Shift Left mindset, weaving quality into the development lifecycle from the start.

  • Proactively surface and address impediments to help teams meet Sprint objectives.

  • Collaboratively contributes to establishing, reviewing, and upholding software development practices and architectural standards.

  • Troubleshoot product issues quickly and efficiently across a range of systems.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional software engineering experience developing, implementing, and supporting enterprise applications using an n-tier architecture, the Microsoft technology stack, and the .NET framework.

  • Strong experience with ASP.NET and modern client-side development in React or Angular.

  • Strong experience building applications on the SQL Server platform using T-SQL, stored procedures, and functions, and proficiency with Entity Framework or a comparable ORM.

  • 1+ year experience designing and implementing AI-assisted workflows and solutions into software products using large language models on a major platform such as Microsoft Foundry, Anthropic, or OpenAI.

  • Experience optimizing prompts, context management, and token usage to improve response quality while managing performance and cost.

  • Hands-on experience using an AI coding assistant such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code to accelerate development.

  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming and ability to apply inversion of control and unit testing to deliver loosely coupled, high-quality architectures.

  • Experience with Azure DevOps (or a similar work-item management tool) and Git for version control.

  • Ability to conduct thoughtful code reviews and collaborate with others to improve solutions and the overall product.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across many disciplines and quickly build trust with new teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • xperience working in a scaled Agile (SAFe) program.

  • Experience with SharePoint development.

We expect the candidate to uphold Crowe's values of Care, Trust, Courage, and Stewardship. These values define who we are. We expect all of our people to act ethically and with integrity at all times.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Crowe is not sponsoring for work authorization at this time.
