What are software companies?

Software companies are businesses that develop, distribute, and maintain computer software products and services. These companies create applications, operating systems, and other digital tools for various industries and consumers. Their work can range from developing custom solutions for clients to producing widely used commercial software. Software companies may also provide support, updates, and consulting services related to their products. Well-known examples include Microsoft, Adobe, and Salesforce.

What are some common challenges faced by new employees working at software companies?

New employees at software companies often face challenges such as adapting to fast-paced development cycles, learning company-specific coding standards, and integrating with cross-functional teams. It can also be demanding to quickly get up to speed with proprietary tools, legacy systems, or unfamiliar tech stacks. However, most companies provide onboarding programs, mentoring, and regular team meetings to help new hires acclimate and contribute effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a software company, and why are they important?

To thrive in a software company, you generally need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), version control systems like Git, and agile development methodologies is typically expected. Excellent teamwork, adaptability, and communication skills help individuals collaborate effectively and respond to rapid technological changes. These technical and soft skills are crucial for building robust software solutions and contributing to a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.

Job description

Our client is a venture-backed financial infrastructure company that recently closed a $90M Series C from a top-tier growth fund. Their platform powers embedded payments, ACH, and ledger services for mid-market software companies, and the engineering team is rebuilding its core money-movement infrastructure to support 10x volume growth over the next 24 months.

As Senior Software Engineer on the Payments Platform team you will own end-to-end design and delivery of new ledger primitives, idempotency and reconciliation systems, and bank integration adapters. You will work in Go, Postgres, and Temporal, and partner closely with Product, Risk, and Compliance to ship financially correct, audit-grade software.

The team operates with strong engineering rigor — design docs, code review, on-call rotation, and incident retrospectives are part of the culture. Senior engineers are given meaningful technical scope and have a clear path to Staff within 18–24 months.

Requirements
  • 6+ years of backend engineering experience shipping production systems at scale
  • Strong proficiency in Go, Java, or another statically typed backend language
  • Deep experience with Postgres or another relational database — schema design, query optimization, transaction semantics
  • Comfort with distributed systems concerns: idempotency, exactly-once processing, eventual consistency
  • Prior fintech, payments, or financial infrastructure experience strongly preferred
