General Definition of Work
The Town of Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department is seeking highly experienced and motivated instructors to lead specialized sports clinics. This position is designed for individuals with advanced knowledge and proven experience in specific skill development areas such as:
  • Baseball/Softball (pitching, hitting, fielding)
  • Basketball (shooting, ball handling, position-specific training)
  • Other sport-specific skill development areas

Instructors will design and implement high-quality training sessions that go beyond basic recreation, focusing on skill progression, technique refinement, and player development.
Programs may be offered seasonally, ongoing, or in short-term clinic formats, and may serve a variety of age groups and skill levels.
This position is responsible for delivering structured, engaging, and development-focused instruction that enhances participant performance and fosters long-term interest in the sport.
The set hourly rate for this position is $40 hourly.

  • Design and implement structured, skill-specific training sessions
  • Lead and instruct individuals and small groups in a clinic-style environment
  • Assess participant skill levels and provide individualized feedback
  • Create a positive, disciplined, and high-energy learning environment
  • Work collaboratively with the Program Supervisor to develop curriculum and schedules
  • Prepare and maintain equipment and instructional areas
  • Enforce all safety standards and department policies
  • Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians, and staff
  • Identify and report any facility or equipment issues
  • Assist with special events, camps, or tournaments as needed
  • Promote program growth and community engagement in athletics

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated expertise in a specific sport or skill area
  • Ability to teach and break down complex techniques in a clear, effective manner

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED Certification
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Preferred:
    • 3+ years of experience coaching, training, or instructing in a specialized sport
    • Previous experience working in clinics, camps, or player development programs
    • Collegiate playing experience or higher-level coaching/training background

Special Requirements
  • Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record
