What is SmartPlant Electrical?

SmartPlant Electrical is a specialized engineering software developed by Hexagon PPM to help design, model, and manage electrical systems in industrial facilities such as power plants, oil and gas refineries, and manufacturing plants. It provides tools for electrical load analysis, cable routing, equipment specification, and documentation. The software streamlines the design process, ensures compliance with industry standards, and helps reduce errors by enabling collaboration among engineers and other stakeholders. SmartPlant Electrical is widely used in large-scale projects for accurate and efficient electrical system management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SmartPlant Electrical engineer?

To thrive as a SmartPlant Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, project design, and experience with industrial standards, often requiring a relevant degree. Expertise in using SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL) software, AutoCAD, and other engineering design tools is essential, and certifications in SmartPlant applications can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help engineers coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and manage project complexities. These skills and qualities are important to ensure accurate electrical system designs, compliance with industry standards, and successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges SmartPlant Electrical professionals face when integrating the software with other engineering tools in a project environment?

One frequent challenge Smartplant Electrical professionals encounter is ensuring seamless data exchange between Smartplant Electrical and other engineering design tools, such as SmartPlant Instrumentation or 3D modeling software. Differences in data formats, project workflows, and version compatibility can require additional setup and close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. Proactively establishing clear data integration protocols and maintaining consistent communication with other departments helps address these issues and ensures project efficiency. Additionally, staying updated on software updates and best practices is essential for successful integration.

What is the difference between Smartplant Electrical vs Electrical Designer?

AspectSmartplant ElectricalElectrical Designer
CertificationsTypically requires electrical engineering or CAD certificationsOften requires electrical or drafting certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign software-focused, office-based, often in engineering firmsOffice or field, involved in detailed electrical system design
Industry UsageUsed in engineering, construction, and plant design projectsCommon in construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure projects
Primary ResponsibilitiesCreating electrical models and layouts using Smartplant Electrical softwareDeveloping detailed electrical schematics and layouts

Smartplant Electrical and Electrical Designer roles overlap in electrical system design but differ mainly in software use and scope. Smartplant Electrical focuses on 3D modeling and integrated project data, while Electrical Designers concentrate on detailed schematic development. Both roles are essential in electrical project execution within engineering and construction industries.

Job description

Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-300 small modular reactor. The position is offered by SMR LLC as a member of the Holtec International family, a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for the nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry.
Location: Camden, NJ
Primary responsibilities:
  • Lead cable routing design for the SMR-300 plant across electrical power, I&C, and communications systems.
  • Develop routing design approach and coordinate design criteria/inputs (separation, fire area routing considerations, congestion management, constructability, maintainability).
  • Execute and/or oversee raceway design including cable tray and conduit layout, routing constraints, and installation considerations.
  • Provide raceway sizing inputs (tray sizing/fill inputs, conduit sizing inputs, routing quantities/support needs as required by project workflow).
  • Coordinate and own penetration coordination (locations, routing paths, interface with civil/structural and other disciplines) and ensure routing is consistent with building/structural constraints.
  • Produce/review routing deliverables (routing layouts, design notes/details, routing reports, model-based outputs, design change documentation) and ensure technical accuracy and quality.
  • Perform and/or oversee cable routing and raceway layout work in SmartPlant 3D (SP3D).
  • Lead/participate in model reviews; drive clash/congestion resolution and ensure routing content supports downstream construction and installation sequencing needs
  • Provide technical direction, mentoring, and quality oversight for entry-level engineers supporting cable routing/raceway deliverables.
  • Review/check work products for compliance with project requirements, applicable codes/standards, and internal procedures.
  • Support construction/field execution as needed (RFI responses, routing conflict resolution, etc.)

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or closely related discipline) from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • 10-15 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering design with significant experience leading cable routing and raceway design (nuclear preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead routing/raceway scope (quality, schedule, coordination) and provide technical direction to junior engineers.
  • Working knowledge of codes/standards and engineering practices relevant to cable routing and raceway design (routing separation concepts, cable tray/conduit practices, grounding/bonding concepts, fire protection interfaces, and constructability considerations).
  • Proficiency working in a 3D plant design environment; experience performing or directing routing development in SP3D (or equivalent with strong ability to ramp quickly).
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills; able to coordinate across multi-disciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strong planning, prioritization, and organizational skills; able to manage competing priorities and deliver results.

Preferred Qualificatioins:
  • Master's degree preferred; PE preferred (or ability/interest to obtain).
  • Nuclear project experience with familiarity supporting regulated design environments and formal design controls (QA, traceability, design reviews).
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating routing and penetration interfaces with civil/structural, mechanical, piping/HVAC, I&C, and systems engineering.
  • Experience supporting procurement/vendor submittal reviews impacting routing/raceway (equipment interfaces, installation constraints, vendor routing limitations).
  • Experience supporting construction execution (walkdowns, constructability reviews, field change support, installation sequencing coordination).
  • Familiarity with related tools/workflows often paired with SP3D delivery (model review tools, cable schedule databases, configuration management / document control processes).
