What is smart merchant processing?

Smart Merchant Processing refers to advanced payment solutions and services provided to businesses for handling electronic transactions, such as credit card and digital payments. These services typically include payment gateways, point-of-sale systems, fraud prevention tools, and analytics to help merchants securely and efficiently process customer payments. Smart Merchant Processing aims to streamline the payment experience for both merchants and customers, reduce transaction risks, and provide valuable insights to help businesses grow. Providers often offer integrations with e-commerce platforms, mobile payment options, and 24/7 support.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in smart merchant processing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Smart Merchant Processing often encounter challenges such as staying updated with rapidly evolving payment technologies, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, and managing security risks related to transaction processing. Collaborating closely with IT, compliance, and customer service teams helps address these challenges, as does ongoing training and certification. Being proactive in learning about new payment solutions and security protocols can also enhance job performance and career growth in this dynamic field.

Job description

Description

We are a technology-driven company. We built our business with the purpose of empowering people and improving their organizations, one payment at a time. We started our journey by providing smart and simple payment processing tools and products but haven't stopped there. We are backed by a team of world-class experts and the best technology talent, and we are committed to helping more new businesses get started, increase the revenues of our customers, and bridge the gap between online merchants and payment solutions. Our mission is to give companies the tools they need to change the future of their business.

Requirements

Why This Posting Looks Different

Most job postings start with a title and a list of software you need to already know. This one doesn't, on purpose. Our CEO has one hiring philosophy above all others: hire for raw ability, not resume keywords. We've found that the people who make the biggest impact here aren't always the ones with the "right" background - they're the ones who are genuinely smart, hungry to learn, and able to get things done without being told exactly how.

If that describes you, we want to talk - regardless of what industry you're coming from, what your last job title was, or whether your experience maps neatly onto anything in our org chart. We will figure out where you fit. Your job is just to show us you're one of the smart, hardworking people we're looking for.

What We're Really Looking For

Intelligence, applied. Not a test score - the ability to pick apart a messy, ambiguous problem, understand what actually matters, and reason your way to a good answer.

Self-starter energy. You see what needs to happen and you start doing it. You don't wait for a task to be assigned to you in detail before you get moving.

Fast learning. You can go from "never seen this before" to "competent enough to contribute" in days or weeks, not months - and you enjoy that process.

Execution. Ideas are cheap. You have a track record of actually shipping things: projects finished, processes built, problems closed out, not just diagnosed.

Leadership. Whether or not you've had "manager" in your title, people naturally look to you in a crisis, trust your judgment, and follow your lead when it counts.

Team chemistry. You raise the level of the people around you. You give real feedback, take it well, and make the team better just by being on it.

What You'll Actually Do

Because this role isn't tied to one department, your day-to-day will be shaped by where your strengths meet our biggest needs. In practice, that tends to include a mix of the following:

Get dropped into an ambiguous, high-priority problem - in Finance, Risk, Technology, Marketing, Client Engagement, Sales, or wherever the business needs it most - and figure out how to solve it.

Learn the systems, workflows, and people needed to get something done, quickly, without a formal training program built just for you.

Take an idea from "we should probably do this" to a working solution, then hand it off cleanly or keep owning it, depending on what makes sense.

Step into informal leadership on projects - organizing people, setting direction, and keeping momentum, even without a title that says you're in charge.

Partner closely with leadership, including direct exposure to the CEO and executive team, on initiatives that matter to the business right now.

Move between functions as our needs evolve, building a broad view of the business that most single-department roles never give you.

Who You Are

You could come from consulting, finance, operations, engineering, hospitality, the military, academia, retail management, a startup you built yourself - honestly, almost anywhere. We care far more about how you think and work than what's on your resume.

You've got a track record, somewhere, of being the person who figures it out - the one people describe as "scary smart," "a machine," or "someone who just gets things done."

You're comfortable with ambiguity. "Here's a problem, go" doesn't stress you out - it's the part of the job you like best.

You communicate clearly, in writing and in person, and you don't need everything spelled out to move forward.

You want to build something, be recognized for it, and grow quickly into more responsibility - not coast in a role with a predictable ceiling.

A bachelor's degree is preferred but not required. We'll take demonstrated ability over a diploma every time.

Why Payarc

Payarc has grown quickly by betting on talented, driven people and giving them real ownership early. This role is a direct extension of that bet: we'd rather find an exceptional person and build the right role around them than post a narrow job description and hope the perfect match happens to apply.

Direct visibility with senior leadership, including the CEO, from day one.

A genuine path to define your own trajectory inside the company based on where you add the most value.

Competitive compensation, benefits including medical, dental, and vision, and a 401(k) match.

A fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where initiative is noticed and rewarded.

How to Apply

Tell us why you're one of the smart, hardworking people we're describing. A traditional cover letter is optional - what we really want is evidence: a project you drove end to end, a hard problem you solved with no roadmap, a time you led without a title. Show us how you think, not just where you've worked.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Ability to participate in virtual and in-person meetings.

Occasional travel may be required depending on where you're ultimately placed.
