Work EnvironmentOn-site, hardware-focused, wearable tech settingsSoftware development, digital environments, often remote
Industry UsageWearable tech, healthcare, manufacturingGaming, training, visualization applications

Smart Glasses and AR Developers both work with augmented reality technology, but Smart Glasses focus on hardware integration and wearable devices, while AR Developers primarily create software applications for AR experiences. Understanding their differences helps in choosing the right career path or collaboration focus within AR technology projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Smart Glasses Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Smart Glasses Developer, you need a solid background in software development, augmented reality (AR) frameworks, and user interface (UI) design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Unity, ARCore/ARKit, and experience with hardware/software integration is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and design user-centric solutions. These skills are essential to build innovative, functional smart glasses applications that enhance user experience and meet market needs.

What are smart glasses?

Smart glasses are wearable devices that look like regular eyeglasses but are equipped with advanced technology such as displays, cameras, sensors, and connectivity features. They can provide augmented reality (AR) experiences, display notifications, capture photos and videos, and access information hands-free. Smart glasses are used in various fields, including healthcare, manufacturing, and everyday life, to enhance productivity and convenience. Popular models include Google Glass, Vuzix Blade, and Meta smart glasses.

What are some common challenges faced by Smart Glasses developers in integrating hardware and software components?

Smart Glasses developers often encounter challenges in ensuring seamless integration between hardware (such as sensors, displays, and cameras) and software (like user interfaces and real-time data processing). Balancing power consumption and device performance is another frequent hurdle, as wearables require efficient resource use to maintain battery life. Additionally, developers must address user experience concerns, such as comfort, intuitive controls, and privacy, while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including engineers, designers, and product managers.

Job description

Imagine being part of a team building the future of Smart Glasses. Amazon's Smart Delivery Glasses are just the beginning. Amazon is focused on bringing AI, technology, and design into a form that is familiar to millions of people in a way that has never been done before.

If you are excited about pushing the envelope and developing brand new experiences that empower users to do more as they engage with the physical world, we would love to meet you.
Amazon is looking for a Senior Product Manager (Technical) to join the Smart Glasses team working to build new best-in-class enterprise wearable products. We are a customer-obsessed team working on big bets in an innovative environment. As a Senior Product Manager (Technical) on the Smart Glasses team, you will own and lead the definition, development, and launch of future versions of smart glasses for enterprise applications

Since this role is inherently cross-functional and highly visible to senior leadership, you will work closely and communicate effectively with engineering/science, design, product, operations, and executive teams to drive successful outcomes across our roadmap.
A successful candidate will have a proven track-record of developing and shipping integrated hardware/software products and features that deliver exceptional customer experiences. They have experience building products designed for demanding operational environments-understanding the unique requirements of ruggedized, field-deployed hardware including durability, serviceability, and reliability at scale. They bring technical depth across display technologies, sensing systems, and body-worn architectures, and can translate that depth into product decisions that balance performance, cost, and user experience

They are adept at both strategy and execution, and are strong communicators (written and verbal). They are customer obsessed, data-driven, and embody a sense of urgency. They work collaboratively in a cross-functional, fast-paced environment, and are adept at synthesizing a variety of customer needs, technologies, and capabilities into products and experiences that customers love.

They are also open to learning and working on various aspects of the product, from hardware to software to field deployment, as the need arises.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution for future versions of enterprise smart glasses and wearables.
- Develop crisp working backwards documents (PR-FAQs) and detailed product requirements that can be used to create product specifications and architecture.
- Lead initiatives throughout various stages of the product lifecycle - from ideation to development to launch - while working cross-functionally across product, engineering, design, program, operations, and business teams with a hands-on, execution-focused mindset to deliver the product to market.
- Own enterprise-specific product requirements including device management, fleet deployment strategies, field serviceability, and operational integration with existing enterprise systems and workflows.
- Define, design, and automate enterprise workflows that integrate with existing operational systems, ensuring the product delivers measurable productivity and safety outcomes from day one.
- Develop deployment playbooks and device management strategies for large-scale rollouts across distributed workforces, including provisioning, OTA updates, and field support models.
- Partner with operations teams to define deployment strategies, training programs, and support infrastructure for large-scale enterprise rollouts.
- Define and drive the product roadmap based on team vision and strategy

Understand customer needs and identify opportunities to create or improve products and features. Champion and gain buy-in for the strategy and roadmap by influencing and effectively communicating with internal stakeholders and senior management.
- Proactively identify and resolve issues that may impair the team's ability to meet strategic, financial, operational, and technical goals.
- Drive executive-level decision making and manage prioritization/trade-offs throughout the product lifecycle.
- Stay closely connected to the latest developments in the smart glasses and wearable technology categories, anticipating future trends and opportunities to drive innovation.
