Job description

The Sr. Marketing Manager’s primary focus will be on managing the day-to-day commercial aspects of the takeaway of wet gas and crude oil in SM’s DJ Basin asset. This position will work together with SM’s asset development and operations teams to develop, interpret and communicate drilling and completions plans, production forecasts and procure necessary infrastructure and contractual needs. The Sr. Marketing Manager will provide direction and recommendations on the marketing/sales of natural gas from the DJ Basin. The individual has significant experience in E&P crude oil and gas gathering, contract negotiations, commodity sales (gas), A&D, and deal evaluation.

Essential Roles & Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead and develop direct reports
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with third-party midstream providers to ensure proper execution of SM’s production strategy in the DJ basin
  • Manage internal communications around third-party scheduled maintenance, throughput impacts, capacity constraints, capacity expansions, etc.
  • Serve as liaison between SM’s DJ Basin Asset and third-party midstream providers
  • Lead and manage weekly, monthly and quarterly conference calls, meetings and planning sessions with internal and external partners
  • Assist, as needed, in all Midstream and Marketing cross-functional efforts including but not limited to: annual budgeting efforts, drill site planning and development, monthly netback settlement review, recurring operations/financial review, etc.
  • Manages monthly settlements for SM-owned infrastructure and communicates with Revenue Accounting for invoice preparation
  • Assist Business Development, Corporate Reserves and Asset Development teams, as necessary and requested, in the technical and commercial evaluation of assets for acquisitions, divestitures and trades
  • Review physical assets, both third-party and internal, to determine ways to optimize SM production and product netbacks
  • Interact closely with internal and third-party midstream service providers to ensure on-time well connects to SM development and favorable pipeline hydraulics
  • Ensure third party contractual obligations are met, including dedications and delivery of volumes, as well as volume planning and forecast obligations
  • Assist SM Operations and EHSR, as needed, to ensure cooperation from third-party service providers around all EHSR rules and regulations
  • Demonstrate commitment to safety, environmental compliance and SM Mission, Vision and Values in all job aspects
  • Prepares and delivers executive level reports and presentations
  • Monitors gas fundamentals including supply and demand trends and implications on forward pricing
  • Performs acquisition/divestiture evaluations and due diligence
  • Prepares production and pricing forecasts and other market analyses/models
  • Helps develop long term gas marketing strategy including marketing commitments and planning and analysis to maximize revenue, limit exposure and maintain flexibility.
  • Assists in developing company's view on commodity pricing
  • Other duties as assigned

Computer/Software Applications

Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel required.

Role-Specific Technical Knowledge & Skills

Advanced knowledge of Gas Marketing fundamentals, including contract negotiation and contract knowledge. Advanced proficiency in analyzing complex gas and oil midstream logistics deals. Advanced understanding of patterns, correlations, and trends to support decision making and risk mitigation.

Typical Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Engineering or relevant field required. MBA or energy-related Master's Degree preferred.

Typical Experience: Minimum of 10 years of Oil and Gas industry experience. Gas and Crude oil commercial experience required. Familiarity and experience in the DJ Basin strongly preferred.

Schedule: Hybrid. In the office Tuesday-Thursday, with opportunity to work remote Monday and Friday. Moderate travel.
