What is a sled?

Sleds are vehicles designed to glide over snow or ice, typically used for transportation, recreation, or sport. They have smooth runners or a flat bottom, allowing them to move easily across frozen surfaces. Sleds can be pulled by people, animals, or gravity, and come in various types, including toboggans, dog sleds, and sledges used in winter sports. In some regions, sleds have historically been an essential means of travel during snowy months. Today, they are popular for activities like sledding hills, dog sled racing, and bobsled competitions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SLED account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SLED (State, Local, and Education) Account Manager, you need strong sales acumen, in-depth knowledge of government procurement processes, and experience in public sector markets, typically supported by a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, contract management systems, and public sector bidding platforms is crucial. Excellent relationship-building, negotiation, and strategic communication skills set top performers apart in engaging diverse stakeholders. These competencies are vital to navigating complex sales cycles, ensuring compliance, and driving business growth within government and educational clients.

What are some unique challenges SLED sales professionals face when selling to state, local, and education customers?

SLED sales professionals often navigate complex procurement processes and longer sales cycles due to strict regulations and budget constraints in the public sector. Building relationships with multiple stakeholders and understanding diverse funding timelines are essential. Success in this role requires patience, adaptability, and a deep understanding of government and educational institution needs, as well as compliance requirements.

Job description

We help the world run better

At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging - but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.

SAP's mission is to help the world run better and improve people's lives. Nowhere is that mission more tangible than in our work with State, Local Government, Education, and Healthcare (SLED+H) customers, where the business solutions we sell directly touch the communities we live in.

In support of that mission, the Vice President, Sales - SLED+H East will: 1) recruit and retain a diverse team of Industry Account Executives (IAEs), 2) model and reinforce the SLED+H and Public Services culture across the region and extended team, and 3) consistently exceed targeted revenue goals. To accomplish these goals, the leader must develop specific territory plans to ensure growth in all areas of the business, retain existing customers, uphold performance standards, and manage priorities for the sales team.

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS
  • Execute the SLED+H vision and strategy, ensuring consistent communication to the East sales team and adapting as appropriate to meet the specific needs of the East region.
  • Own and drive IAE territory plans to ensure growth across all revenue streams.
  • Build and maintain executive-level relationships with key customers and partners.
  • Lead a disciplined approach to pipeline management, forecast accuracy, and opportunity prioritization across the team.
  • Champion partner co-sell motions across the region, helping partners understand and realize the commercial opportunity of selling with SAP.
  • Collaborate effectively with the virtual account team and broader internal SAP functions - including Value Engineering & Advisory, Pre-Sales, Line of Business Sales, Marketing, Development, Centers of Excellence, Cloud Success Services, and SAP NS2 - to drive customer and revenue outcomes.
  • Provide coaching and account strategy support throughout the sales cycle. Support the account team in the identification, development, pursuit, negotiation, and closing of opportunities.
  • Conduct regular account and pipeline reviews with team members and the virtual account team.
  • Manage territory and account assignments.
  • Drive individual growth, development, and career progression within the team.
  • Build a portfolio of active customer references, promoting the value customers capture from their investments in SAP.
  • Exceed annual revenue targets.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

The successful candidate for Vice President, Sales - SLED+H East will bring the following experience and attributes:

  • Minimum of 10 years of related business software sales experience required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of sales management experience in a fast-paced, consultative, and competitive team-selling environment required
  • Demonstrated track record of exceeding revenue targets against quota.
  • Experience in complex enterprise solution sales required — whether software, or large-scale professional services and consulting engagements. Direct ERP sales experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with government contracting vehicles and public sector procurement processes required; direct SLED+H contracting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working for SAP, an SAP partner, or a large enterprise software company required.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a high-performing, inclusive team culture that attracts, develops, and retains top sales talent.
  • Candidate must be based in the East region.
  • Significant travel across the East region required.
