Community Manager
OR
Full-time
Posted 12 days ago
Job description
Summary
The Community Manager owns the day-to-day health of Rewriting the Code's global community across our two Slack workspaces, serving students and early-career women in tech in 190+ countries. This role is the human face of RTC inside the community: moderating and facilitating conversation, building member-to-member programming, and surfacing member voices across the organization. As Marketing's richest source of on-the-ground member insight, the Community Manager feeds what they hear in the community directly into RTC's positioning, proof, and program decisions. This role sits at the engagement stage of RTC's flywheel: converting new-member growth into an active, connected community that produces the outcomes for women in tech that our partners and funders invest in.
What You’ll Own
Community Health + Engagement
- Own moderation, facilitation, and community guidelines across both RTC Slack workspaces (Student and Early Career), serving as the primary point of contact for members and fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment.
- Design and run member-to-member community programming: channel activations, discussion series, new-member welcome experiences, and peer-connection formats that turn joiners into participants.
- Build relationships with members through proactive, personal communication, and set up scaled Slack workflows (automated welcomes, engagement nudges) where personal touch can't reach everyone.
- Elevate member voices across RTC's affinity groups and identity-based communities, ensuring programming and conversation reflect the full breadth of RTC's membership.
- Identify and implement Slack integrations and community tools that improve the member experience and streamline moderation and programming.
Member Insights
- Systematically surface member themes, needs, struggles, and wins from community conversation and share them across the org. The Marketing team is the primary consumer of this insight for positioning and proof; Programs, BD, and Philanthropy also draw on it.
- Monitor engagement health using community analytics (Common Room, Slack analytics), tracking participation, retention signals, and emerging trends, and report leadership insights.
- Gather member stories and testimonials in partnership with Content Marketing, flagging standout voices for impact reporting and partner-facing proof.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Lifecycle Marketing on the journeys that move members from joined to active; the Community Manager owns the relationships and surfaces; Lifecycle owns the triggers and channels.
- Support platform feature launches by carrying launch messaging into the community; positioning and launch plans come from the Marketing team, and adoption messaging is coordinated explicitly between the two roles.
- Collaborate with the Social Media Manager to bridge public community discovery (TikTok, LinkedIn) to private community belonging.
How Success Is Measured
Engagement health, participation, and retention signals: active member rates, member-to-member interaction, program participation, and the quality and usefulness of member insight delivered to internal teams.
Required Qualifications + Key Competencies
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education/training/experience.
- A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in community management with demonstrated success owning the growth and activation of a Slack (or similar platform) community.
Knowledge & Skills
- Advanced fluency in community analytics: interpreting engagement metrics, identifying trends, and translating them into actionable recommendations. Experience with Common Room or similar community intelligence tools is a plus.
- Expertise in Slack administration, community tooling, and CRM/marketing automation (HubSpot preferred), as well as cloud-based office suites, with a propensity to learn new technologies and maximize usage.
- Exceptional written communication and the judgment to represent RTC's brand voice in thousands of daily member interactions.
Nice to Have
- Experience using AI tools to scale community operations: automated moderation support, insight synthesis from large volumes of conversation, workflow automation, and content drafting that keeps a human in the loop.
Attributes
- Organizational Advocate. Believes in the organization's mission and demonstrates this by upholding the company's brand, culture, policies, and values with integrity and professionalism.
- Accountable. Owns decisions, outcomes, and results, both positive and negative.
- Interpersonal. Relate well with individuals from diverse backgrounds, situations, and experiences; patient in hearing others out and building rapport with dignity and tact; ability to engage and inspire a diverse group while promoting inclusion and collaboration.
- Communication. Create and share information that is sufficiently detailed and promotes desired results through verbal and/or written exchanges; ability to develop compelling, impactful content for newsletters and other initiatives that engage and inform our community.
- Customer Centric. Emphasize ongoing community member satisfaction and engagement with programming and initiatives; understand and anticipate members' wants and needs, and implement solutions to meet them; respond to and resolve members' inquiries or concerns promptly.
- Detail-Oriented. Consistently exhibit a high standard of excellence and attention to detail; a keen focus on accuracy and relevance in creating community content, with exceptional editing and proofreading abilities.
- Organized. Effectively manage, coordinate, and discern task priorities to complete concurrent projects successfully; ability to work independently and initiate tasks under minimal supervision; adept time and project management skills to develop precise strategies, processes, and procedures to accomplish goals.
- Research & Analytical. Proficient in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to identify trends, patterns, opportunities, and gaps in community engagement; use data to inform the continuous improvement of organizational initiatives and drive strategic decision-making.
- Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking. Identify potential challenges and propose reasonable solutions and creative strategies to boost community engagement; anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them; use judgement to resolve issues while adhering to established guidelines and processes.
