Job Summary

The SIS Systems Engineer is responsible for lifecycle management, performance, leading technical support, projects, and compliance of all Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Distributed Control System(s) at the site, and all associated applications and system software. This role ensures systems are designed, implemented, maintained and tested in accordance with IEC 61511/ IS84 / industry standards and internal company requirements.

The position serves as the site's subject matter expert for functional safety and works closely with Process Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and Process Control teams to reduce risk and ensure safe, reliable plant operations.

The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, solid background of self-direction, work prioritization, and will be able to gain support from Operations, Maintenance, Process and Project Engineering personnel.  Will frequently interact with site management, vendors, and contractors.

How You Can Be the Impact

  • Lead and support system lifecycle planning & SIS/DCS upgrade studies.
  • Lead technical execution of medium to large sized SIS/DCS projects including design, installation, testing, systems commissioning and operational acceptance.
  • Lead or support new SIS systems and modifications to existing systems
  • Verify Safety Integrity Level (SIL) targets are met through proper design and calculations
  • Development and implementation of factory acceptance test (FAT)and software acceptance test (SAT) strategies.
  • Develop and execute regulatory, supervisory, advanced control and optimization schemes.
  • Work closely with Operations to analyze and reduce unnecessary alarms.
  • Analyze and drive improvements to SIS/DCS interlocking strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize system performance and develop process control projects to exploit these opportunities.
  • Analyze and lead mitigation of potential control system risks including system security and network management.
  • Develop recommendations for instrumentation upgrades to improve plant EHS and Stability performance.
  • Develop and provide training to improve operator and engineering knowledge of interlock actions.
  • Lead or support the Management of Change (MOC) process for various control related projects.
  • Lead and support control system related incident investigations.
  • Understand Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) standards and implement related projects.
  • Ensure proper documentation, validation, and audit readiness of SIS systems
  • Obtain stakeholder buy-in and project justification.
  • Support operations as a technical resource during abnormal conditions.
  • Develop and improve site control system related procedures, policies, and standards.
  • Coach, guide, and train technicians and operators to attain proficiency in the use of control system technology and equipment.
  • Support Process Automation operations in the unit through attendance of HAZOP's, PHA's, LOPA and MOC meetings.
  • Maintenance and updates of all DCS/SIS/PLC related hardware and software.
  • Troubleshoot, analyze, develop and implement improvements and mitigation strategies to maintain SIS System performance.
  • Train Operations personnel on control-related improvements.
  • Respond in a timely manner to plant and control system issues.

What Matters to SABIC

  • BS Degree in Chemical/Electrical/Control Systems Engineering/Computer Science or 5+ years' experience in related field
  • 5+ years' automation experience in a chemical/petrochemical industry preferred.
  • 5+ in DCS/SIS project (or equivalent) lead positions (DCS&PLC project experience is a plus)
  • Recent experience in regulatory and advanced process control methods
  • Knowledge of chemical manufacturing process control and field instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of process control software such as Logmate, IP21, etc.
  • Willingness to attend training courses as required.
  • Computer proficiency (Excel, Access, SQL, etc.)

 

Desired Skill: 

  • Instrument and electrical knowledge and/or experience.
  • Proven experience with modern DCS Systems such as Emerson DeltaV SIS or Rockwell AAdvance SIS. Experience with DCS systems such as Emerson DeltaV or Yokogawa Centum VP is considered a plus.
  • Proven experience with management and application of process historian tools such as IP21.
  • Knowledge and experience with safety instrumented systems (SIS)
  • Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM)
  • Demonstrated high energy and execution focus.
  • Demonstrated project management and facilitation skills.
  • Self-starter; works well with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work and lead in a team-oriented environment.
