Job description

Chief Financial Officer
General Purpose:
Purgatory Resort is seeking a hands-on, operational CFO to lead the financial function for our Resort. Reporting to the General Manager, you will serve as the financial conscience of the resort, blending the technical precision of a Controller with the strategic foresight of a senior leader.
This is a Full Time, Year Round position that offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision insurance, 401K options, and a free season pass for you and your dependents. All full time, year round positions are eligible for an annual bonus in addition to regular wages.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Leadership
  • Strategic Business Partner: Serve as the primary financial advisor to the GM. Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable intelligence that guides operational decisions (e.g., lift operations, F&B margins, and revenue optimization).
  • Shape the Narrative: Move beyond reporting "what happened" to explaining "why it happened." Identify financial risks and opportunities, providing the leadership team with data-driven remedies to stay on budget.

Financial Operations & Reporting
  • Operational Excellence: Oversee all daily accounting operations using Sage, including General Ledger, AP/AR, Cash Management.
  • Month-End & Audit: Execute a flawless month-end close process in coordination with MCP Shared Services. Lead the preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Compliance: Manage all regulatory reporting, including US Forest Service (USFS) fee calculations and audits, ensuring strict adherence to federal permit requirements.

Technology & Digital Strategy
  • Systems Expertise: Serve as the super-user and strategic lead for the resort's financial technology stack. You must drive data integrity across Siriusware (POS) and Sage (ERP) to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Data Visualization: Leverage Looker to create dashboards that track daily revenue performance, labor stats, and operational metrics.
  • Collaboration Tools: Champion the use of Google Suite (Sheets, Drive, Docs) to streamline collaboration between the Finance team and mountain operations.

Investment & Growth Planning (Real Estate & Capital)
  • Capital Tracking & Management: Own the lifecycle of resort capital planning. Track all real estate and mountain improvement projects from approval to capitalization, ensuring projects stay on budget and ROI is monitored.
  • Debt & Asset Management: Manage local debt schedules and ensure compliance with covenants. Oversee fixed asset tracking and depreciation schedules for complex mountain and village assets.

Financial & Compliance Risk Management
  • Insurance Liaison: Partner with MCP shared resources and Risk Management to oversee all financial aspects of the resort's insurance portfolio and analyze trends to reduce premiums and manage deductibles effectively.
  • Internal Controls: Maintain and test a robust system of internal controls to safeguard resort assets, specifically regarding cash handling in high-volume outlets (F&B, Retail, Ticket Office).

Capital Sourcing and Strategy
  • Develop Capital Strategy: Formulate and execute a long-term capital structure strategy that supports company growth and financing options.
  • Sourcing Funding: Identify, evaluate, and secure new capital in conjunction with MCP finance.
  • Funding Partner Relations: Act as the primary liaison for Purgatory with banks and financing partners to maintain trust and transparency.

  • Banking Partnerships: Establish, cultivate, and maintain strong relationships with senior management at key banking institutions to ensure favorable terms.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure ongoing compliance with debt covenants, reporting requirements, and other contractual obligations to lenders.
  • Treasury Management: Oversee treasury functions, including cash flow management, bank account management, and optimizing working capital.

Finance Team Leadership & Development
  • Team Builder: Lead, mentor, and develop the Purgatory accounting team. Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and customer service.
  • Cross-Departmental Training: Act as an educator, training non-financial department heads on budget management and P&L literacy to build a financially savvy leadership team.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Systems Proficiency:
    • ERP: Strong experience with Sage (or similar complex GL systems).
    • POS: Experience with Siriusware is a distinct advantage.
    • BI/Data: Proficiency in Looker or similar data visualization tools.
    • Productivity: Expert-level proficiency in Google Suite (Sheets, Docs, Slides).
  • High Agency: You identify variances and fix them without being asked. You are comfortable working in a fast-paced, seasonal environment.
  • Risk & Insurance: Demonstrated ability to manage resort insurance portfolios.
  • Engaging leader of people who builds high-performing teams through humility, accountability, and a proactive commitment to organizational effectiveness and talent development.

  • Experience: 7-10+ years of progressive financial experience, with strong background in Controller-level duties. Ski Industry, Hospitality, or Real Estate Development experience is highly preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA or MBA preferred.

  • This position operates in a high-altitude mountain environment, balancing time between a professional office setting and active engagement across the resort.
