What are Sioux Chiefs?

Sioux Chiefs are the recognized leaders or heads of the various bands and tribes within the Sioux Nation, which is a group of Native American peoples in North America. Traditionally, Sioux Chiefs were chosen for their wisdom, bravery, and ability to lead and make important decisions for their communities. Their roles included representing their people in councils, leading in times of war or negotiation, and ensuring the well-being of the tribe. Chiefs played an important part in preserving Sioux culture, traditions, and laws. Today, the position of a Sioux Chief may combine traditional leadership with modern forms of tribal governance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sioux Chief, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sioux Chief, one historically needed strong leadership abilities, deep knowledge of tribal traditions, and respect within the community, often established through experience and consensus rather than formal qualifications. Chiefs relied on oral communication, negotiation, and organizational skills rather than modern technical tools or certifications. Integrity, wisdom, and the ability to inspire and unify people were crucial soft skills that set exceptional leaders apart. These qualities were essential for maintaining tribal cohesion, making important decisions, and ensuring the well-being of the community.

Job description

Land Survey Crew Chief
Department: Geospatial
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Sioux Falls, SD
Compensation: $60,000 - $115,000 / year
Description
If you're passionate about precision and love working with cutting-edge tech like Trimble, Leica, and Topcon, this is your chance to make an impact. ISG is hiring a Land Survey Crew Chief to bolster our growing Sioux Falls crew! You'll dive into diverse projects across Public Works, Water, Commercial, and more; helping shape the future of our communities with every survey.
In this role, you will work closely with Brian Riniker, PLS, Land Surveyor and Dan Steuber, PE, LS, Geospatial Practice Group Leader. You will also collaborate with other ISG employee-owners across the firm. Our land survey team serves public and private clients throughout our ISG footprint. We are a full-service and multi-disciplinary firm, performing award-winning work in planning, design, survey, and construction.
Essential Duties
  • Collecting quality field survey data at an adequate speed (specific to each project and task)
  • Overseeing the operation and maintenance of survey equipment used on job site and assist with training others when practical
  • Preparing field drawings and high-quality notes of each project in accordance with ISG and survey standards
  • Becoming familiar with all the provided survey hardware; Trimble, Leica, Topcon, etc
  • Assembling all instruments and measuring devices needed to complete various types of survey work assignments. Responsible for seeing that the proper equipment is loaded and charged for the next assignment

  • Being a team player and be accountable to other members of the team to complete assigned tasks and recognize performance of team members

We've listed a compensation range that reflects our expectations for this role, including both direct and indirect components. We understand that your experience and value may fall outside of this range. If you feel you're a strong fit but your compensation needs differ, we're open to a conversation-let's talk.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
You may have formal education in surveying, civil engineering, or geographic information systems (GIS). You may not. What we need is someone with some fundamental experience, eagerness to learn and enjoys being outside.
This is primarily a field-work position. Travel to job sites will be required, therefore, a valid driver's license with a good driving record is necessary. Your home office will be our Sioux Falls location, though our survey vehicles are mobile offices. Even while in the field, Land Survey Specialists have access to technology and experts.
We don't hire survey or construction staff with the intention to lay them off over winter, they are a crucial part of our team at ISG. That said, we are seeking someone who is very adaptable and willing to take on tasks that may be outside their comfort zone.
Additional qualifications include:
  • Familiarity with survey hardware including Trimble, Leica, Topcon, etc
  • A working knowledge of Robotic Total Stations, and GPS
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Strong communication, organization, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel out of town for projects
  • Comfortable and enjoy working outside
  • Experience in construction staking, performing ALTA, boundary and topographic surveys
