Job description

Job Overview

A Software Engineering Group Lead leads a software development team as they create software solutions for AEVEX, typically related to unmanned systems. They serve as a "player/coach", working alongside the team to ensure projects are successful while mentoring in coding, debugging, testing, code review, and troubleshooting, to ensure best practices. This persons serves as an in-house expert, both for managers from other departments who need software solutions and the less experienced staff within the Software department.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for all aspects of the software development process including requirements, design, implementation, functional test, troubleshooting
  • Work with upper management to define software requirements and take the lead on operational and technical projects
  • Lead specification, design, development, maintenance, integration, documentation, debug and testing of software for Windows and embedded software applications in C and C++
  • Identify and implement best practices in simulation methodologies, tools, and frameworks
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a team of software engineers
  • Ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Engage employees by creating a climate in which they want to do their best
  • Provide oversight and direction to the employees in accordance with AEVEX's policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal and external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company's policies and practices.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Strong proficiency in C++, C#, Python or other programming languages
  • Possess excellent organization and problem-solving skills with extensive hands-on experience in software development
  • Strong foundation integrating hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) systems
  • Understanding of real-time simulation requirements such as reducing latency and synchronization with hardware systems
  • Familiarity with Agile and DevOps methodologies
  • Familiarity with aerospace simulation tools and autopilot systems such as ArduPilot, PX4, FlightGear, X-Plane, and JSBSim (desired)
  • Knowledge of communication protocols (e.g. SPI, I2C, UART, CAN) and pub/sub network topologies (desired)
  • Proficient in software development of microcontroller level embedded systems (desired)

Education / Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field required, MS preferred

Experience

  • 7+ years of software development experience preferred
  • 2+ years of leading other software engineers preferred
  • Prior experience developing Autopilot systems, ground control stations, or flight simulation software is highly desirable
