What is a simulation product manager?

A Simulation Product Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the development, launch, and improvement of simulation software products or platforms. They work at the intersection of technology, business, and user experience, ensuring that the simulation products meet market needs and align with company goals. Their duties often include defining product vision, gathering customer requirements, collaborating with engineering and design teams, and managing the product lifecycle from conception to release and beyond. Simulation Product Managers may work in industries such as engineering, healthcare, defense, or education, wherever realistic digital simulations are needed.

How does a simulation product manager typically collaborate with engineering and sales teams during the product development lifecycle?

Simulation Product Managers play a central role in bridging the gap between technical and commercial teams. They regularly work with engineering to define product requirements, prioritize feature development, and ensure that simulation tools meet customer needs. Additionally, they collaborate with sales and marketing teams to understand customer feedback, support product launches, and provide technical expertise during client engagements. Effective communication and cross-functional teamwork are essential to ensure that both the product’s technical quality and market relevance are maintained throughout development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a simulation product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simulation Product Manager, you need a solid background in product management, domain expertise in simulation technologies, and a relevant degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software (like MATLAB, Simulink, or Unity), Agile methodologies, and product lifecycle management tools is typically required, along with certifications such as PMP or Agile Scrum Master being advantageous. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills enable you to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These skills are crucial for guiding product strategy, ensuring technical feasibility, and delivering high-value simulation solutions that meet user needs.

Purpose of Position

The Product Manager at FSI is an owner of product direction for their assigned business domain. This role ensures FSI investments are aligned to business strategy, clearly articulated in terms of measurable value, and prioritized to maximize outcomes for the organization.

The Product Manager works directly and continuously with business stakeholders to understand domain priorities, defines what business outcomes need to be achieved and why, and owns accountability for whether delivered solutions achieve the intended business outcome. This role operates as a trusted partner between IT and the business, bringing product discipline, outcome orientation, and prioritization rigor to the relationship.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Define and maintain a rolling product roadmap for the assigned domain, expressing priorities in terms of outcomes and value.
  • Translate business strategy into investment priorities and partner with business stakeholders to identify capability gaps and emerging opportunities.
  • Represent and generate buy-in to the product vision, strategy, roadmap and value with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Understand the broader implications of implementation decisions and new feature requests.
  • Anticipate future business needs and proactively shape product direction, bringing a customer and end-user perspective to product decisions.
    • Own the value proposition for every significant initiative entering the delivery pipeline, defining the expected business outcome, KPIs, and anticipated ROI.
    • Apply a consistent, data-driven prioritization framework to evaluate and rank work across the domain, enabling transparent trade-off decisions grounded in business value.
    • Participate in intake governance in partnership with the Delivery Office, ensuring work meets the definition of ready before entering the delivery pipeline.
    • Manage risks, dependencies, and trade-offs at the strategic level; identify issues early and facilitate resolution with Delivery Leadership.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for the assigned business domain, building trusted relationships with business leaders and subject matter experts.
    • Coach business stakeholders to articulate needs in terms of outcomes and value; manage expectations with transparency and data.
    • Champion investment within the business domain and facilitate change management for significant delivered capabilities.
    • Own the definition and value articulation of epics before handing off to the Product Lead; accountable for the quality and readiness of what is handed off.
    • Remain available for strategic clarification and business context during delivery without owning day-to-day backlog management.
    • Participate in sprint reviews and product demonstrations to validate that delivered work aligns with intended business outcomes.
    • Own measurement of whether delivered work achieved its intended outcome, tracking KPIs and validating ROI assumptions.
    • Partner with the Delivery Office on value realization reviews and use findings to improve future value articulation and prioritization decisions.
    • Participate actively in the Product Manager community of practice, applying consistent intake standards, value proposition templates, and prioritization frameworks across all domain work.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or equivalent industry experience.
Minimum Experience
  • 8+ years in product management, business relationship management, or a comparable strategic business-IT interface role.
  • Demonstrated experience owning business outcomes, not just facilitating requests or managing projects.
  • Experience developing and maintaining business capability roadmaps aligned to organizational strategy.
  • Proven ability to develop product and marketing strategies and effectively communicate recommendations.
  • Proven track record building and maintaining senior-level business stakeholder relationships.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to articulate business needs in terms of measurable outcomes, KPIs, and value propositions.
  • Experience with value-based prioritization frameworks (WSJF, RICE, or comparable).
  • Understanding of product roadmap development and portfolio management against finite delivery capacity.
  • Familiarity with OKR and KPI frameworks; customer and end-user focused decision-making.
  • Deep understanding of the assigned business domain: operations, objectives, pain points, and strategic direction.
  • Ability to connect technology investment decisions to business strategy and organizational outcomes.
  • Strong situational analysis and decision-making capabilities in ambiguous or politically complex environments.
  • Exceptional communication skills across all organizational levels: written, verbal, and visual.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority and coach business leaders on value-based prioritization.
  • Ability to facilitate difficult prioritization conversations, including declining low-value work with clarity and respect.
  • Working knowledge of agile delivery principles sufficient to collaborate with Delivery Leads and Product Leads.
  • Understanding of the epic-to-story decomposition model and the Product Manager's role at the strategic level.
  • Experience in organizations undergoing agile transformation or product operating model maturation.
  • Familiarity with intake governance frameworks and portfolio-level demand management.
  • Experience with data-driven decision-making tools and business intelligence platforms.
  • Background spanning both business-side and IT-side roles.
