What is simulation game development?

Simulation game development is the process of designing, creating, and programming video games that replicate real-world activities or systems. These games often aim to mimic real-life scenarios, such as flying planes, managing cities, or running businesses, providing players with realistic experiences and decision-making opportunities. Developers use specialized software, physics engines, and detailed modeling to create immersive environments and mechanics. This field requires a blend of technical skills in programming, design, and sometimes subject matter expertise to accurately simulate the chosen scenario.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a simulation game developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simulation Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++ or C#), a solid understanding of mathematics and physics, and experience with game engines, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as Unity or Unreal Engine, version control systems, and possibly certifications in relevant software are highly valuable. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for designing engaging simulations and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for building realistic, interactive experiences and ensuring the success of complex game development projects.

What are some typical challenges faced by simulation game developers when collaborating with subject matter experts?

Simulation game developers often work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure the accuracy and realism of their games. One common challenge is translating complex, real-world systems into engaging and accessible gameplay without oversimplifying key details. Effective communication between developers and SMEs is crucial, as developers need to balance technical constraints with the need for authenticity. Establishing clear expectations and maintaining regular feedback loops can help overcome these challenges, resulting in a more realistic and educational gaming experience.

Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Lattice Showcase team at Anduril delivers immersive experiences that tell cohesive, compelling stories about how Anduril products accomplish critical missions. Leveraging Sand Table-our internal 3D visualization platform that transforms data into interactive augmented reality environments-we translate complex demonstrations into streamlined, interactive showcases for government and military leaders. We work across multiple product lines-integrating capabilities from autonomy, hardware, and software-to craft narratives that align all stakeholders around mission outcomes. Our work bridges engineering simulation and compelling storytelling: we take real-world demos running in simulation and transform them into polished, interactive experiences that showcase how our technology delivers mission success. As a cross-functional team of designers, operators, and integrators, we combine technical depth with narrative craft to demonstrate the full potential of Anduril's capabilities.

ABOUT THE JOB

As a Software Engineer on the Lattice Showcase team, you will tackle a diverse range of challenges. Your work will ensure seamless integration of Anduril products to achieve critical outcomes. You will work on a fast paced team and have opportunities to watch your creations operate in dynamic environments.
Above all, Software Engineers at Anduril must embody a "Whatever It Takes" mindset-executing tasks expediently, scalably, and pragmatically while prioritizing the mission. You will make sound engineering decisions to deliver high-quality outcomes on time. In addition to building the software, you will work directly with customers to deploy it.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Architect and develop the core Sand Table plugin using our Carbon extensibility framework, leveraging your expertise in both low-level C++ and high-level TypeScript
  • Partner closely with artists, designers, and systems engineers to extend Sand Table's capabilities, integrating new data sources, user interactions, and visual features
  • Become the subject matter expert on the Carbon extensibility layer, providing guidance and creating robust APIs that empower other teams to build upon your work
  • Dive deep into the engine's C++ foundation to understand its architecture, identify extension points, and ensure your plugin code is performant and stable
  • Write clean, high-performance, and maintainable code that seamlessly blends the power of a real-time engine with the flexibility of a modern scripting environment
  • Diagnose and solve complex technical challenges at the intersection of the core engine, scripting layer, and artistic workflows
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and experience working in large, performance-critical codebases (must have C++ not C#)
  • Professional experience in game engine development or a related field involving real-time 3D simulation
  • Solid experience with TypeScript for scripting, tooling, or application development
  • A proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including artists and engineers from other disciplines
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and extensible code with an eye for creating robust APIs
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively on ambiguous, open-ended technical tasks
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Direct experience creating or working with modding communities and toolkits for games
  • Experience with API design and SDK development
  • Familiarity with 3D math and real-time rendering concepts
  • Experience shipping a AAA game title
