What is a silverback?

Silverbacks are mature adult male gorillas, typically over the age of 12, distinguished by a patch of silver or gray hair on their backs. They are the leaders of gorilla groups, known as troops, and are responsible for making decisions, protecting the group, and mediating conflicts. Silverbacks play a crucial role in the stability and safety of their troop, often guiding them to food sources and shelter. Their strength and experience make them central figures in gorilla social structure.
