What is a silicon design engineer?

Silicon Design Engineers are professionals who design and develop integrated circuits (ICs) and semiconductor devices, commonly known as 'chips.' They use specialized software tools to create, simulate, and verify the layouts and functionalities of these microchips, which are essential components in electronic devices. Their work ensures that chips are efficient, reliable, and meet the performance requirements for products such as smartphones, computers, and automotive systems. Silicon Design Engineers often collaborate with hardware and software teams to deliver innovative semiconductor solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by silicon design engineers in the development cycle?

Silicon Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting tight deadlines while ensuring design accuracy and managing complex verification processes. Navigating frequent changes in project specifications and collaborating across cross-functional teams—including software, hardware, and verification—can add layers of complexity. Additionally, balancing power, performance, and area (PPA) trade-offs requires careful analysis and iterative optimization throughout the design cycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a silicon design engineer?

To thrive as a Silicon Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, digital logic design, and semiconductor fundamentals, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with hardware description languages (such as Verilog or VHDL), EDA tools (like Synopsys or Cadence), and knowledge of ASIC or FPGA design flows is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring reliable silicon designs, meeting project requirements, and collaborating efficiently in complex engineering environments.

THE ROLE:

As a member of the Computing & Graphics (CG) SoC Architecture team, you will develop and design custom silicon for client, discrete graphics, handheld gaming, gaming consoles, and related platforms. In this role, you will work with the lead SoC architect to define customer-specific architectures and contribute to product specifications, micro-architecture specifications, performance, and power trade-offs. The role will work from early concept development through the development phases to final production.

THE PERSON:

In this role, you will collaborate with a network of expert architects and designers around the world where collaboration and communication skills are critical to the success of this role, and excellent organization skills are essential. You will approach sophisticated problems with a firm methodology and problem-solving technique and conduct experiments and analysis to formulate recommendations and next steps for other colleagues and SOC and IP design teams located in across multiple time zones and geographies. You will formally present your findings to co-workers, teams, and customer engineering teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support pathfinding activities to influence and define next-generation architecture
  • Analyze design tradeoffs in terms of performance, power and area impact
  • Analyze and compile competitive analysis data
  • Collaborate with architecture leads to translate product requirements into detailed specifications
  • Work with AMD’s Engineering teams and IP teams to ensure architectural alignment of features and clean interoperability and integration
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive end-to-end process documentation to ensure cross-team alignment and clarity for execution

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Skills in scripting, data analysis, experience with EDA tools, VLSI design flow and CMOS technology.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work in a dynamic and diverse environment
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to approach novel problems from multiple perspectives and at varying levels of abstraction
  • Ability to analyze and understand sophisticated workflows and processes, and develop innovative ways in streamlining and automating
  • Proven ability to translate complex technical details into clear, concise, and well-structured documentation
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Perl, TCL, Python) is highly preferred

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
