What is the difference between Signer vs Notary Public?

AspectSignerNotary Public
CredentialsTypically no formal certification required, but may need trainingMust be commissioned and pass a background check
Work EnvironmentPerforms signing of documents, often at client locations or officesProvides official notarization services, often in designated offices or mobile settings
Industry UsageUsed in real estate, legal, financial transactionsCommonly involved in legal, real estate, and financial industries

The main difference is that a Signer primarily facilitates the signing process of documents, while a Notary Public is an official authorized to verify identities and notarize documents. Notaries often serve as Signers but also have additional legal responsibilities and credentials. Understanding these roles helps clarify their distinct functions in legal and financial transactions.

How do you become a signer?

To become a signer, you typically need to complete a certification program approved by your state's licensing authority, which includes passing a written exam and demonstrating proficiency in sign language. Some signers also pursue a degree or training in sign language interpretation or related fields, and gaining experience through internships or volunteering can be beneficial.
