Job description

Bargaining Unit: EA
Rate of Pay: $28.46/hour + DOE
Summary
Assists the physician or mid-level practitioner in the examination and treatment of patients performing technical services; within the scope of practice of the Medical Assistant, both in family and specialty care. This position also will assist in the daily clerical/receptionist operations of the Occupational Health Clinic.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interviews patients, obtains vital signs and documents this information in the patient record.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients and special procedures. Drapes patients as needed and positions instruments and equipment.
  • Follows the policy for cleaning and/or processing instruments for sterilization and demonstrates proper sterile technique.
  • Safely operates and maintains medical equipment as directed by the supervising physician/designee and policy.
  • Obtains test results and records as requested by the medical provider.
  • Administers intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal injections; verifying correct medication and dosage with licensed clinical staff and obtaining needed consent.
  • Routine Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory testing, as directed by the supervising physician/designee.
  • Performs ear lavage for ear wax removal.
  • Reinforces patient education materials/instructions under specific written authorization of the medical provider.
  • Completes all tasks daily as assigned.
  • Enters data into the computer as needed to maintain office and patient records; has ability to accurately access and maintain information on various Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
  • Obtains prior authorization for medications.
  • Maintains par levels of medical supplies and medications.
  • Keeps rooms well-stocked and organized per practitioner preferences. Reports deficiencies to Clinic Manager for ordering.
  • Ensures all outdated supplies, materials and medications are discarded and replaced per policy.
  • Maintains cleanliness of patient exam rooms.
  • Receives visitors, determines nature of business, and directs as appropriate in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Retrieves messages and performs follow-up on them; utilizing medical assisting skills. Answers telephones and gives information to callers or routes as appropriate.
  • Maintains and schedules appointments; using advance knowledge of clinical needs to ensure accurate schedules are maintained. Informs staff of significant schedule changes. Informs physician of commitments, surgeries and meetings.
  • Documents and follows up as appropriate on no show appointments.
  • Registers patients; inquires with all returning patients as to changes in address, phone and insurance information.
  • Prints and updates schedules for all practitioners.
  • Advanced knowledge of billing work queues and processes.
  • Prepares daily charge batch. Collects payments and office co-pays, deductibles and self-pay balances at time of service. Maintains an accurate cash box.
  • Using medical assisting skill completes various forms and authorizations for patients.
  • Schedules diagnostic tests and/or surgeries per specific physician practice.
  • Handles flow of patient reports, ensuring appropriate practitioner review and signatures.
  • Files/scan reports in the medical record, and files and retrieves charts into and from filing system.
  • Maintain par levels of all forms and office supplies and report any deficiencies to Manager.
  • Works closely with clinic Manager on clinic processes/procedures including training of staff as needed.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Required Licenses/Certifications
BLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification). - Within 3 months of hire into job
Other Experience/Qualifications
  • A willingness to be trained on-the-job in duties not previously learned is essential.
  • Experience as medical assistant in a medical office, working in a clinical setting with patients and handling charts.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
